are the cabin door and baggage door lock cylinders the same dimensions?

Does anybody know if the lock cylinders for the cabin door and baggage door are the same dimensions?

From my 1970 Mooney parts manual, the

  • Cabin door has PN 3786 LOCK & KEY
  • Baggage door has PN 3339 LOCK ASSY

I'm waiting for some other parts to arrive before removing plastic panels for repair/refurb, but would like to get a matching pair.  Note that I replaced the lock cylinder for the baggage  15 years ago (aftermarket, minor mod) and it's been holding up fine.  Just want the two doors to have matching keys.

Finally, *IF* I decide to replace with the expensive parts, are the keys the same blank as the ignition switch?  If so, that may justify going more expensive just to get all 3 keyed identically.

Thanks!

Mine appear to be the same blank.

Take the door and baggage cylinders to.any lock Smith, and they can be easily renewed to match the ignition key. Just don't mention "ignition" or "airplane" and they'll do it. The doors are just filing cabinet locks.

"Can you rekey these two cylinders to match this key please?'

When I replaced my cylinders with Medeco locks I think they were both the same.  Certainly use the same key.  The interesting thing is that Aircraft Security shows 2 different numbers...ASM20CD - Cabin Door, ASM20BD - Baggage Door.  But I think the cylinders were the same.  Even if you don't order from them, I'm sure you could call and ask if any difference between BD and CD.

No.  The cabinet locks from the doors are different than my Medeco/Janco ignition key that is much longer.  Completely different profile.

I believe that the cylinders were the same from the factory. Most likely, they were also keyed to the same key as the ignition (at least that was on my previous Mooney). Many Mooney owners chose to change the original cylinders to aftermarket. My choice for my current plane is Medeco cylinder from Aircraft Security:

Fits all Mooney airframes and the full set is relively reasonably priced (in aviation terms). Esily done, but you will need to remove the interior panels for bth doors. Good opportunity to check, lubricate and adjust the door latching mechanisms at the same time. The set comes with 2 keys, but ordering couple of extra keys may be a good idea. If you misplace the keys, the company will produce replacement keys on request but you will need the security lock code and it takes few days to get.

That's similar to what I used for the baggage door long ago.  It came with a bunch of interchangeable arms and indexing cams that I adapted to match the original.

FWIW, last time I looked at the cylinders from Amazon, almost all of them used a small screw to attach the locking arm.  The one I used years ago (still working fine), has a much more substantial nut to hold the locking arm in place.

Realize that with some of those cabinet locks, they all use the same key.

Same with the ignition keys, there are really not that many distinct keys.  When the shop was assembling my CAP-10, they did not have an ignition key.  So they grabbed a ring of spares ones.  First one fit. :D

One of my favorite keys stories was from the late 70s.  A guy is drinking at bar, goes out, gets into his car and drives home.  Next morning he comes out and sees a crease down the side of his car.  He gets angry, but as he is looking, something doesn't add up.  As he looks more carefully, it was NOT HIS CAR.  Same year, make, model.  Same colors.  Same everything.  Including the same key.  He went back to the bar and the other guy showed up and they swapped.

At the time, Ford (IIRC) only had 10 ignition keys.

Probably true, and if somebody wants to break into my airplane, I'd rather it be easy than hard.

Mostly, I just want both cylinders to match and get rid of having 3 keys on my keychain!

I've heard two trains of thought with this...on one hand, thieves are looking for an easy target and when they have difficulty they move to the next aircraft.  VS. a determined thief will just tear up more things to get what they want.  In my mind, I'd rather make someone work for it.

But 100% on there is no reason to have a separate key for each door...if I could get all three keyed the same I would!  In my case I settle on 2 keys as my Janco ignition key is much different than the door cylinders.

I am trying to have them decide to break into your airplane rather than mine. :D :D :D

I am down to a single key.  Medeco locks for baggage and main door.  No more key switch for mags, 2 each locking toggle switches with a spring loaded toggle for starter.

And, no more strapping in and realizing the ignition key is in your pocket. :D

I color-coded my keys"

  • Blue for bags
  • Green for go (because I don't know a color that starts with D)
  • Red for fire

If those are the ones with the plastic overlay, the plastic breaks off and then you MIGHT have a bit of colored plastic in one of the holes. :D  I learned the hard way.

I use something like these now.  I got them from the local lock shop, so I did not buy 40. :D

I have several sets. Some are recolored as in the photo, some have the flexible covers in the dame colors. Try not to use the same set all the time, get a little wear on all of the keys.
