Anyone going to the Garmin G1000 class this coming week?

Anyone on MS going to Olathe KS for next week's G1000 class? I'm looking forward to it and just wondering if any of you all will be there. Or those that have, any nice food recommendations? e.g. BBQ :)

Not going to be in the class, but I’m local - my favorite BBQ is Joe’s Kansas City. There are a couple of locations in the city, the one in Overland Park is only about 15 mins by car from the Garmin HQ. Joe’s KC is open Monday through Saturday.

Other BBQ restaurants that are popular are Q39 and Jack Stack.

Thank you both! I'm sitting in SLC waiting for a delayed connecting flight with a maintenance issue. I thought, "Hey, I'll fly commercial so I don't have to worry about weather and timing!". Brilliant. Ah, the age of just-in-time, oversold, etc. Billboard could say: "If you were in a Mooney, you'd be there by now." ;)

Sorry to be late to the discussion. There is plenty of dining options in the area around that area. A short Uber ride will get you to any kind of dining experience. BBQ options abound and it can be anything from the traditional hole in the wall to fine dining at Q39 or Jack’s Stack. My schedule for this week is full or I would offer to take you out like i did with @Pinecone and a few others.

When I went to a Garmin course I stayed downtown KC. I was walking distance to Jack Stacks and close to Messenger Coffee/Ibis Bakery in the morning for a 15-20 min drive to Garmin.

it was more fun to check out KC than stay closer to Olathe. Joe’s is tasty and more casual. Jack Stacks was more upscale. There was an Italian place next door to Jack Stack that was good too, I think Lydia’s…also more upscale.

I flew into KMKC and enjoy that airport every time I’ve been there. Right next to downtown. City park tie down is free; Avis (816) 931-1039 is the place to call for a rental and they’ll have it waiting at the FBO next door even if you’re tied down at the city parking.

Thank you all! Sitting in KSLC on layover. If I didn't have to work tomorrow early, I'd have loved to check out KC downtown (old buildings etc) at a more leisurely pace or fly myself... Could've cut the triangle easily. 

@hubcap Sorry to have missed you! I'll have to be more proactive next time to enjoy the area. 

Joe's was very tasty and low-key. I'll happily try the other suggestions next time. 

FWIW the Garmin facility is pretty impressive. We got the factory tour today, saw avionics fab and testing lines, etc. If I had to do it over again, I might have gone earlier in the journey (after 40 hrs or so) to get a leg up sooner. OTOH I felt like I had a good grasp and used the time to pick the brains of the instructors. Also fun to talk to other pilots there about their airplanes and flying.

Well, I hope you learned your lesson! Flying commercial when you own a Mooney! Just plain sacrilege! :lol:

There used to be a really neat museum at KMKC, the Airline History Museum - with probably the most beautiful flying Connie in the world.  The museum still exists, but has been involved in a very public spat with the city and the FBO, so it's been more or less closed to the public for a couple of years.

I think they've actually had to sell the Connie, although it might remain at the museum under new ownership - not clear yet.

Anyway, maybe next time you come for a Garmin class, they'll have it all sorted :)

In my G3X/GTN course, almost every pilot there had their plane in the shop doing the avionics upgrade.  So they were getting a leg up.

Yeah, so many trips it does not make sense to fly commercial.

I was looking at using an expiring DL companion ticket.  So thought, maybe a weekend in ATL..  But even non-stop, it is 45 minutes to the airport, be there 2 hours ahead of time.  Two hours gate to gate, then get to baggage claim and get Uber. So close to 6.5 hours door to door.

Versus 7 minutes to hangar.  30 minutes to pre-flight, load, put car in hangar, pee brake.  3+25 to KPDK.  10 minutes to unload.  Get Uber. So less than 4.5 hours.

Add in a layover, and it gets worse for commercial.
