Mooney means?...

To me a Mooney means speed and efficiency.

To another punter "runways, long runways" was the reaction.  Just a smiley faced dig at the brand, or a fair criticism?  Is this a common perception of Mooneys? 

I'm happy with the way our Ovation performs in our part of the world, so the comment is at odds with my Mooney experience. 

So, as a hangar talk topic, curious to know what your reaction to the comment is?

On my D/C model at home port (3,000 MSL and 80 degrees) I can stop easily in 1200 feet and get off in the same amount of distance

One only has to watch many Mooneys landing here to see most of them cross the end at 100' and 90 MPH and then whooptie doo for 2000' thrying to get slowed down. Happens every day here. 

After just going into ST Barts airport in the Twin Otter and actually seeing it in real time I could make it easily in the Mooney.

As @Cliffy points out above, learning to be on speed is critical.  Too slow, you fall from the sky.  Too fast, you run out of runway.  Third option is too fast and you push the nose down, now you are getting into porpoise and prop-strike territory.  Most trainers are fine if you are 10 knots too fast.  They tolerate bad habits.  A Mooney demands more discipline.

It's true they are not as forgiving if you come in to land at 100 kts. But if I come over the numbers at 70 in my O I won't run off of anything long enough to be called a runway.

If I come in on speed, with >5 kts wind down the runway, I can make the first turnoff with moderate braking...650 feet.

I would never say that Myrtle is a short field plane.
 

My personal minimum runway length is 3000’ which is perfectly fine for me. I have never had to stay home because the destination didn’t have enough runway.

When I bought my plane, my home airport was 2850.  I had no issues or concerns.

It has been lengthened to 3350 and was planned to go to 4250.  But dealing with some community issues.

Soft and/or rutted runway or taxiing surfaces and Mooney's with big heavy Lyc or Cont 6's don't mix well - especially when braking.

Yea just an undeserved OWT.  Sure it's not a super cub.  But man I'm still a Mooney Rookie, I've had my F about 100hrs, I'm no ace but with just minor braking I can make the first turn off at my home strip consistently which is 1500 feet, I'm always off the ground in reasonable time, and once in the air the ground falls away quickly...  So a 2500 strip should do me just fine if need be.

There are more untrue OWT about Mooneys than almost any other make and model.  The problem is when everyones experience to begin with is a Skyhawk that will behave quite well even flown sloppy is it creates habits in folks where the problem is their habit, not the plane.
