CCAS Posted May 1, 2024 Report Posted May 1, 2024 Looking for recommendations for a Mooney A&P at Boerne Stage airport NW of San Antonio. My '89 201 is AOG for popping ALT FIELD circuit breaker under multiple conditions. I've seen the various threads on MS that seem to be similar but nothing exactly matches. Hoping to find a mechanic with some experience troubleshooting alternators, voltage regulators, etc. I'll owe a beer to anyone who can connect me. Thanks! Quote
bcg Posted May 1, 2024 Report Posted May 1, 2024 Pat is on the field but, it's close enough to Kerrville that if you call Dugosh, David might be willing to come take a look at it.If you call either one, tell them Bernie said hello.Sent from my Pixel 6a using Tapatalk 1 Quote

I spoke to David yesterday and he's slammed with other work so not able to make a site visit to 5C1 unfortunately. Quote

Check the field wire connection to the alternator. These IO360's have a way of breaking the filed wire there. Quote

CCAS Posted May 31, 2024 Author Report Posted May 31, 2024 Posting resolution: Root cause of the Alt Field CB popping was worn alternator brushes. You can see in the photo that one of the brushes was worn far enough to expose the copper core. Replacing the brushes resolved the issue. This alternator had 1000 hours on it since new. The team at Texas Skyways at Boerne Stage airport found the issue and made the repair....can't thank them enough! John 1 Quote

John With 1000 hours on the alternator and the brushes worn all the way down to the copper, they most likely scored the commutator. It's working, but probably shooting sparks and it will wear down the next set of brushes a lot faster. I would have the alternator looked at by an accessory shop. You only have one alternator and one battery on a J and both better be good if you're flying IFR. It's good to keep a spreadsheet on your accessories and wear items - alternator(s), starter, mags, vacuum pump(s), tires, shock discs, plugs, etc. You can plan for IRAN or overhaul during annuals to do some progressive maintenance. I've been meaning to make one of these spreadsheets for a couple of years now. Any chance you have an example to share? Quote

Hi Lance - thanks very much for that recommendation. I've got my annual scheduled in a few weeks at a nearby MSC and I'll coordinate in advance to add this to the squawk list. Thanks also for the spreadsheet idea....starting mine today! John Quote

We're close enough to meet up for a coffee or adult beverage if you ever have time. Always good meeting MS'ers in person! 1 Quote
