skyking1 Posted April 11, 2012 Report Posted April 11, 2012 Any thoughts on fine wire pugs in an io550g Quote
MooneyMitch Posted April 11, 2012 Report Posted April 11, 2012 Hello Skyking [loved growing up watching Sky and Penny and Songbird!]. I have massive Tempest plugs in my IO-550G and have no experience with fine wires in this engine. I cannot imagine any negative issues at all with running fine wires. Quote
BobAustin Posted April 14, 2012 Report Posted April 14, 2012 Cirrus and Tornado Alley Turbo the supplier of the turbo normalizing has a service recall on Champion fine wires...cracking insulators...I will stick with Massive plugs. You might check the COPA form for details. Quote
skyking1 Posted April 14, 2012 Author Report Posted April 14, 2012 Thanks sounds like its time to switch to tempest Quote
721lp Posted June 8, 2012 Report Posted June 8, 2012 Just finished installing Tempest finr wires in 721LP. My, what a difference. Idle is smoother, runup smoother, and it runs nicely. Hope what I've heard and read about no fouling is true. They sure look nice. I talked to Tim Henderson (Tempest owner) and he sais if I didn't like 'em....send them back. Can't beat that kind of confidence. Quote
skyking1 Posted June 8, 2012 Author Report Posted June 8, 2012 Thanks for the info. I have tried them on two cyl with good luck so am planing on doing the rest soon! Quote
KSMooniac Posted June 9, 2012 Report Posted June 9, 2012 I just put a full set in my IO-360 and have no issues. I can't say I notice much of a difference, but hopefully they last a lot longer. Quote
testwest Posted June 10, 2012 Report Posted June 10, 2012 Skyking You may want to find a friend with a Cessna who gets the Cessna owners magazine. There is an article in there by Mike Busch on spark plugs. One interesting set of pictures compares the insulator of Champion fines versus Tempest. Remember the issue with insulator cracking is currently limited to Champion fine wires, not Tempest. Have a look at those pictures and share your own conclusion here! We are getting ready to do a back-to-back comparsion on older Champion massives (with unknown resistances at this point) and new Tempest fines. We'll post any findings here. Quote
MooneyMitch Posted June 10, 2012 Report Posted June 10, 2012 Just for some information on the cracking insulator issue, we have an Autolite by Unison UHRM38S [fine wire] that was in service approx. 150 hours. The plug developed a broken insulator and is out of service as are the remaining plugs. Tempest bought the rights to the Autolites by Unison and the Tempest is hopefully not going to experience this issue. Quote
