Oak grain is too large for a small piece like this. Maple or cherry would be my choice, or go whole hog with cocobolo or mahogany for the win. Scraps aren't hard to come by.
N201MKTurbo Posted February 28 Report Posted February 28 Just go to Woodworkers Source. They have all kinds of exotic woods. They sell small pieces for making pens. You can find almost any grain structure, color and hardness imaginapnable.

A little Spar varnish. It would be a nice touch.
