Chuck Balogna Posted July 11, 2023 Report Posted July 11, 2023 I’ve seen a few posts here about adding rudder pedal extensions, but not really the other direction. Just picked up a J that has 3inch extensions. At 6’ 2” they leave me a bit cramped, and I find it difficult to stay off the brakes. wondering, for those who have done this mod, is it something that I can simply remove, or modify, or do I need to find an original pedal assembly? I do have all the original install paperwork, but have not dove into it yet. 1 Quote

I think the whole arrangement is held together with cotter pins and clevis pins. Quote
PT20J Posted July 11, 2023 Report Posted July 11, 2023 You should be able to figure out how to reverse it if you reference the drawing. Rudder Extension Drawing 720115.pdf Quote
Danb Posted July 11, 2023 Report Posted July 11, 2023 Pillows I had the same issue as Mike mentioned. You can remove them or alter them like I did. Looking at the drawing of the pedal there is a brace behind the pedal shorten the brace which changes the angle. I had a terrible time riding the brakes this fixed the issue. Your 6’2” just remove the extension as pt says. Quote
A64Pilot Posted July 11, 2023 Report Posted July 11, 2023 If your going to remove then I’d consider purchasing them if you no longer need them. Quote
Pinecone Posted July 12, 2023 Report Posted July 12, 2023 If you are having trouble riding the brakes with the extensions, check if you have the adjustable links. My 252 had the fixed links and the only way to stay off the brakes was to lift my knees to get my toes under the brake pedals. I had the adjustable links installed and adjusted and it solved the problem. I found one link at LASAR for about $300. Second was ordered from Mooney and was a bit over $600. Quote
Red Leader Posted July 12, 2023 Report Posted July 12, 2023 I know A64 already called dibs but if that deal falls through, please DM me as I, too, would like to have my pedals raised! Quote
Aerodon Posted July 12, 2023 Report Posted July 12, 2023 Buy a set of good pedals off eBay, then it is less work to install and can all be done at the same time (remove and install without dissembling the extended pedals). aerodon Quote

The extensions are just sheet metal pieces. Quote

Chuck Balogna Posted July 13, 2023 Author Report Posted July 13, 2023 Easy out. Took about 20 minutes in all, and they're already spoken for! Now all I have to do is strip enough parts off my plane to recoup the purchase price...Who wants an INOP Strikefinder?!!?! 1 1 Quote
A64Pilot Posted July 14, 2023 Report Posted July 14, 2023 I’ll up you an inop radar altimeter, and an inop strike finder. The strike finder seems to work but I think isn’t much good whether it actually works or not and I’d like to fix the Bonzer radar altimeter. I think it’s the R/T or antenna. Quote
Lawmansteve Posted July 14, 2023 Report Posted July 14, 2023 Just got a 1987 J model and I can’t push far enough for full rudder operation, any chance you want to sell the pedals and can they be re-installed on another aircraft? Quote

Mooney may have them in stock. They did a while back. There is a quirk to the kits: one 1.5” kit contains parts for both pedals, but the 3” kit only modifies one pedal do you have to buy two kits. Lawmansteve Posted July 14, 2023 Report Posted July 14, 2023 Thanks for the info - they are showing out of stock online but i will call and see if luck is a lady. Quote

You can't get to the factory inventory online unless you are a MSC, so I assume you are looking at LASAR's site which is only their own stock which has been dwindling. Also, note that every MSC can order from the factory, but they don't all charge the same markup. LASAR has been upping its prices lately and is sometimes not the cheapest place to buy Mooney parts. On the other hand, LASAR has a dedicated parts guy (Dan Riesland). Some of the other MSCs don't relish selling parts because of the hassle factor. There's not much money in it, they have to have someone package it and ship it, and people order the wrong part and then gripe about Mooney's restocking fee when they return it (at least that's what a couple of well-known MCSs have told me). Pinecone Posted July 15, 2023 Report Posted July 15, 2023 Maxwell has Tamara to deal with parts orders. Nice lady. I hear the Dugosh is another good one for parts, and they can walk across the ramp and get the part if the factory has it in stock. 1 Quote
