It looked pretty new upon return, and failed again in 3.2 hours . . . . Internal wires were cut by the spinning gear. Quick, right, cheap: pick any two. The repair took three weeks . . . Sometimes you just can't win. Yikes - curious what shop. I think I paid ~900 for an overhaul exchange Bendix right mag from Aircraft Magneto Service in Montana around the same time, shipped within a couple days, stellar customer service. I think they're a very well regarded shop. Quote

Jim Peace Posted October 26, 2022 Report Posted October 26, 2022 It was discovered during an annual that I had a center electrode missing from my fine wire tempest plug. It was not that old. Told tempest about it at Sun N Fun 2019. The executive there gave me a new plug on the spot and asked me to send him my address and he would give me 8 new replacements. And I had to send the old ones to them This was a while ago so I forgot the exact exchange we had. I did get all new plugs from them and they admitted that the plugs I had which were installed around 2015 time frame were made by a third party and the plugs he then gave me were made in-house. Said they were having quality control issues with the third party and decided to do it themselves. This was around 2019 ish time frame..... here is the contact info I had from 2019: Greg Ehrlich, Aero Accessories Technical Support Specialist 1240 Springwood Ave. Gibsonville, NC. 27249 336 449 5054 Quote

I wish there was ADS-B info available. With 8500' of runway, one wonders if he just mushed along for 1.6 miles of runway before putting it in a field. Clearly that flight didn't start with 160 horsepower. All I know is a C172M at sea level will only climb at 300 or 400 fpm with one mag inop (switch not returned to both) and that's not at max GW. 1 Quote
Beard Posted October 19 Report Posted October 19 The engine on my M20J ran rough today. I pulled the plugs and two of the bottom fine wired (URHM38S) had the center probe burnt of, if that is the correct phrase. I installed them in January 2019 and flew 183 hours on them. I will contact Tempest to see if they can offer a credit on new ones. Quote

Beard Posted October 20 Report Posted October 20 Two pictures of center probe gone. There are three plugs in the pictures. The two on the right have the damage and the one on left does not and is there for comparison. 1 1 Quote
dkkim73 Posted October 21 Report Posted October 21 I had thought the mode of cylinder destruction from a bad plug was pre-ignition, at least the mode we are warned against as a reason for checking plugs, worrying about protruding helicoils, cracked insulators etc. Repeating what I've read, NOT a mechanic... PP thoughts only. Quote
