Parker_Woodruff Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 Quote: Hank If Phillips is so good for your engine, and Aero Shell is so bad, why do you continue to use the bad stuff and cause yourself problems? Ship it to me and I'll dispose of your unwanted 15W50 at no additional cost to your or harm to your expensive engine. :-) Cause I'm just a nice guy. Isn't "no corrosion" cheaper than "bad" oil "bought cheap in bulk a year ago"? Quote

MooneyMitch Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 Don't forget LOP vs. ROP, wet wings vs. bladders !!! Whoops! I forgot speedbrakes vs. no speedbrakes.............. I love all this airplane talk. Quote

jetdriven Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 You can mix 4 bottles of different oil. Plus marvel mystery and STP. Just fly it every day ! Quote
Cris Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 Well Just to add a bit of confusion to the mix since I happen to like Phillips 20/50 over Shell. I worked with my A & P the other day to change the oil & filter. I had told him to order the Phillips but after the oil was drained he proceeded to add the Aeroshell multi. I thought since I was adding that new elixar "Camguard" it would not make a differance but now I am really worried. He went on to say that Aeroshell is the "only" oil to use. When I pointed out to him that we last put in the Phillips he indicated that was probably something he had "laying" around. He went on to say which is the point here that: All of the multi oils need to meet certain gov. requirements to be labled as such and 90% of engine wear happens at startup. His feeling is that there is really little differance between these brands. Go figure. Also it occurs to me that the sample size of Mike Bush's A/C might just be coincidence since it is so small and I believe statistically unreliable vs the fleet. It is possible that Aeroshell sells more oil or some other reason for his position. BTW I think Mike is a great resource just sayin'. So if my expensive engine is going to be trashed with the aeroshell multi should I head out to the airport & immediately change the oil? BTW the pixies add a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil about 10 hrs prior to the oil change on the recommendation of a well known MAPA resource. The filter was absoultely squeecky clean at 50 hrs. Quote
MooneyMitch Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 I have been inspired from all this fun airplane talk, sooooooooooooooooo........................I've decided that I'm going flying today, just for fun! I'm going to fire up the Mooney, see how my engine runs on Aeroshell 15w/50, see if my wet wing tanks are doing ok, and then................I'm going to fly as fast as I can at the airport and just before I get to the traffic pattern I'm going to pop out those speedbrakes, pull the throttle all the way back, drop the gear and see what happens!! This is going to be fun and I'll report back later. Man, aren't we lucky to be flying around in airplanes and especially Mooney's? Yippee!! Quote
jetdriven Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 The thing with 15w50 isn't it's lubrication qualities. The problem is after sitting a few days, corrosion pits form on the cam and lifters. Secondary is it is 50% PAO synthetic. Google that. Fly every day. Don't worry. Most of us do not. I do know Lycomings did not have so many cam problems before synthetic blends. Full throttle 2700 rpm climb too. Quote
MooneyMitch Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that my Aeroshell mulit-grade fire breahting IO-500G is beyond TBO now!! Fire 'em up and get out there folks!!! Quote

MooneyMitch Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 Quote: Parker_Woodruff I can't wait to spend more time flying and less time reading Mooneyspace. Make sure you fly as fast as you can LOP. Saturday can't get here soon enough. Quote
jetdriven Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 You, sir are illegal! Your insurance will deny you. Also your cam is below the crank. Oil doesn't matter on those. Hank Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 OK, Mitch, now you're just making me jealous!! Fly a few laps for me, too, please. **************** Issued: Thu Jan 12 at 10:13 AM (all times EST) Valid From: Thu Jan 12 at 10:00 AM Valid To: Fri Jan 13 at 07:00 AM From 10:00 AM: Wind 240° at 8 kts (gusts to 18), Visibility greater than 6 SM, Overcast 1300 From 12:00 PM: Wind 220° at 10 kts (gusts to 20), Visibility 5 sm, light rain showers, Broken 2500 From 07:00 PM: Wind 240° at 11 kts (gusts to 19), Visibility 3 sm, light showers snowrain, mist, Overcast 1300 From 12:00 AM: Wind 240° at 16 kts (gusts to 28), Visibility 2 sm, light showers snow, mist, Broken 500, Overcast 1200 **************** I'm not real sure what "snowrain" is, and I don't especially want to find out, but the nice man on TV this morning said this evening's rain will "suddenly" turn into snow, and the water on the roads will "flash freeze" into sheets of ice. Overnight lows in the teens should make for an interesting morning, and the high will be in the mid-20s tomorrow with scattered snow all weekend . . . My last pattern work on Sunday was WOT/Max RPM; turn crosswind when above the ridge, throttle back to ~20", prop back to <2500, turn downwind, more throttle back, set flaps for Takeoff, airspeed for 90 mph; come over the trees on final at 80 mph. Somehow I think yours will be different! R vs C is just not a valid comparison! Quote
sleepingsquirrel Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 Is it OK to take the oil I drain from my aircooled aircraft engines, regardless of the weight and brand , then use it in my Snapper lawn mower? It is air cooled. I haven't had any problems. Quote
MooneyMitch Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 Oh to live in California.......................and running LOP too!! Better call my ins. co. too and confess. Quote
Hank Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 Squirrel, I bet it will work pretty good in a chainsaw, too . . . . . . . . Quote
jetdriven Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 Nope. I read right here! LOP, flying past TBO, and climbing at redline RPM voids your insurance. I read it right here! Quote: Hank Quote
PTK Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 See what happens when we don't fly our Mooneys and instead we sit here typing on a keyboard? If our Mooneys could only talk! They would knock some sense into us and tell us to go fly them instead. Oh...wait a minute what am I saying... my Mooney does talks to me. And I affectionately talk to her back... !! Quote
MooneyMitch Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 Wait a minute, this poor fellow just asked if he should change his oil manuf. and we've drifted this thread way beyond!! I love MooneySpace and all you posters and I love my Mooney and all that goes with it. Have a great day everyone!!! Oh yes, don't forget Lt. Dan Band in Temecula [F70] March 1. He's doing his show to benefit one of our vet's! If you are near, please fly your Mooney their and join us. Quote
Seth Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 Not to stir up the fire, but I flew 500 trouble free hours in my F Model on Aeroshell 15w50. However with the switch to the Missile including the fresh overhaul, and after researching and talking to a lot of mechanics, engine shops, and other pilots, I made the switch to Phillips XC 20w50. At 100 hours, I'll start adding camguard. I also plan to change oil every 25-30max hours. PM me and I'll give you my reasoning. Take care, and enjoy flying!!! -Seth Quote
Vref Posted January 12, 2012 Report Posted January 12, 2012 600 Ft ceilings storm winds up and rain don't help much neither to prevent corrosion...In stead of ground run-ups for lubricating the engine and getting wet meanwhile I prefer a cheaper method ....camguard may be that solution.......I wish we had Californian weather over here from time to time...though If we we can hang in for while we might just have it......well if the low countries are not flooded with this global warming thing.... enjoy ur flying Mitch grrrrrrrrrr Quote
