M20F-1968 Posted August 4, 2021 Report Posted August 4, 2021 Need some help from all of you. I need to remove my G600 from my panel in order to access two nuts mounted to through bolts in the firewall to install a new shower of sparks. The G600 is mounted from the panel front, but there is not enough of a service loop to pull it out and unhook the connectors. Can someone send me a YouTube video or pictures of how to manage the locking mechanism on the G600 connectors so I have a better sense of how it remove them? Finding a local avionics person to help has been difficult. John Breda Quote
kortopates Posted August 4, 2021 Report Posted August 4, 2021 The connectors are squeezed from the side edges to release and then gently wiggle as you pull. Hopefully they are already labeled with the plug number to ensure their is no mystery for where they go back, but if not, I'd take the time to do that after they're off. (you wouldn't be able to do that till the GDU is out, but you can mark them with pieces of tape till you get the GDU out). I find it easier to remove them with my head on the floor below the panel. It can be done without removing the seat(s) if you can accept being contorted for a couple minutes. In theory it should be possible from the top with the galreshield off, but I can't see the pins from that angle without an inspection mirror so, prefer from under. Make sure they align up correctly before re-inserting them, from underneath I do the top one first and work down so I have a good view of the pins. 2 Quote
201Mooniac Posted August 4, 2021 Report Posted August 4, 2021 Paul, Yours might be different but on mine they weren't squeeze from the short edges there was a slide latch on the lower side of the connector that needed to be pushed up. I agree that removing them with your head on the floor is the easier technique. Quote
kortopates Posted August 4, 2021 Report Posted August 4, 2021 you’re right, “latch” is much better description. I am sure you’re right to on how it works, when i think back how many months ago since i last did this, my memory probably isn’t entirely correct on the details. but it is pretty intuitive once your looking at it.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
M20F-1968 Posted August 5, 2021 Author Report Posted August 5, 2021 Does anyone have a picture of the connectors involved? John Breda Quote
carusoam Posted August 5, 2021 Report Posted August 5, 2021 Hmmm… For an avionics guy with knowledge of Garmin products related to install and uninstall…. Lets see if Greg @Baker Avionics is around… (looking for details on the back of a G600, connectors) Best regards, -a- Quote
Warren Posted August 8, 2021 Report Posted August 8, 2021 The tab is on the side of the connector and has a spring behind it. Squeeze and hold while pulling. Looks like this (tab is shown on the lower side of the connectors.. 2 1 Quote
carusoam Posted August 8, 2021 Report Posted August 8, 2021 @M20F-1968 Hey John! Looks like Warren may have posted a pic of what you are looking for… a spring hiding behind a tab, locking the cables in place… Best regards, -a- Quote
thinwing Posted August 10, 2021 Report Posted August 10, 2021 now i really appreciate the installer of my g600..all 3 connectors have anout 3 in of slack ,so once 6 panel screws are removed..there is room to simply pull unit out by hand and reach in and remove connectors. This also made the job of removing all the vacumn regulator/hose etc from the firewall...it provides a huge accesss hatch to the backside of panel 1 Quote

I got the 3 connectors removed and the G600 out without any difficulty. I did from underneath the panel looking and reaching up. I now see how the mechanism latches. My question now is: 1) Is it best to push the slider/lock in and then install the connector, or 2) Is it better to leave the slider/lock alone and let it snap into place when the connector is pushed on sufficiently? I seems that is is probably best initially to not press in on the slider/lock so that you can gently feel how the connector goes over the pins initially. Want to make sure it goes on straight with no un-necessary force. John Breda Quote

Want to make sure it goes on straight with no un-necessary force. Exactly right, initially its all about lining up the pins so none are bent. Even before you start to put the connector onto the socket - make sure all pins are straight (none got bent while out). If you find any resistance at all, pull it back out as you probably don't have them propery alinged. Once it goes on jently I don't recall anything special getting it too latch as you push it gently all the way on - I only recall needing to unlatch from the edge when its removed. But if there is any pin that is not aligning into its socket hole you'll feel resistance right away! its a lot easier than all of my verbose comments suggest to just be careful!! 1 Quote
