An example of a well handled emergency in a Piper Cherokee. Great thinking to declare an emergency and land it at JFK right away. He didn't try to go back to his home field and then crash halfway there. He landed before it could get bad. We heard about it on an ATC recording rather than in the news or from the NTSB. Good, quick, smart, cautious thinking for a safe outcome.

Also a reminder to caution that wake turbulence and keep things strapped down and checked!

What a great job by the Kennedy controller. There was not one second of hesitation, no long string of questions, just pick a runway, any runway, roll the trucks.

It's amazing how one small decision could have completely changed everything. He said the fire erupted in the battery compartment near the control cables. Had he decided to run back to Farmingdale instead, headlines could have read "Airplane control cable breaks due to airborne fire, crashes into house in suburban neighborhood, sparks national concerns that GA is too dangerous and should be cancelled."

Outstanding performance by all involved. Sometimes it's difficult to understand the JFK rapid fire, but this controller was great at juggling and didn't miss a beat.

That was a beautiful thing to behold.  Great outcome as well.

Agreed, that was probably the best I've ever heard.  Usually it starts with "umm say again emergency"? "Will you require any assistance?" and then all of the typical questions...
