I recently purchased a Lightspeed Twenty 3G on Facebook marketplace locally, but when I went to plug it into the comm port, it just had nasty squealing noise. I took apart the battery module and of course the wire is frayed badly where it enters the battery module from the dual plug end.

I called Lightspeed and they said they no longer support these headsets. Anyone know a source that might salvage headsets or that can custom make a cord? I only bought this thing because I want to introduce my 4 year old to flying and her favorite color is purple. I have a 20XL from way back (of course the cords don’t match) that she can use, but alas, those are gray.

Jakl,

Got a pic of what is wrong..?

Post pic, get some suggestions on how to get it replaced...

I’m guessing this is a really easy fix... somebody in the avionics business can get this worked out for you...

can you solder? Are you good with electrical tape? That kind of thing...

Don’t let the purple dream die!
:)

PP thoughts only, not a headset fixer...

It's right at the base of the flexible plastic where it goes into the battery module. It's both on the dual cord exit end as well as a little on the inside. It seems to be both black wires, as I can see the red ones still intact inside.

The top photo I tried electrical tape but was overall unhappy with how it came out. It's all the way down into that flexible part so not really an easy way to clean that up without cutting some of that plastic away I'm thinking

Typical of headsets... the PVC wire coating doesn’t age well...

Realistically, the headset company doesn’t service them any more.... but....

Their current headsets probably use the same parts...

See if you can get the parts from them...

Then see if you can find a parts seller to support what you have... you won’t be the only one with this challenge...

Your friendly neighborhood hacker space and those who hang out there should be able to help. You probably just need to cut off a bit of the cable and re-crimp it on the connector (where the friendly neighborhood hackers and their tools will come in handy). You can also try to find a local Ham or group. If all else fails, a friendly avionics shop might have the tool to help you. Do not try to "crimp" it with a small screwdriver.

Depending on what you paid for them light-speed will give you a discount on a new set trading in the old ones.  Or just go to light-speed and have them fix them up for you.  I just had my sierra headset done $175 looked like brand new when I got them back.

Have a 30-3g headset as my secondheadset. Needed work so I called light speed and they told me they don’t repair them any more but they would give me credit toward a new headset. It was just for a broken cup stirrup and I found one on eBay so being a CB I ordered parts and repaired them on the cheap. This was just a few months ago
