Tim Jodice Posted August 26, 2020 Report Posted August 26, 2020 Had a MT prop put on yesterday. I flew to Deland, FL to have them install and balance it. Great guys they started 8:30 had it done by 3. They did have to do some modifications to the TKS slinger ring but other then that it went as planned. Without weights it was .11 and .02 IPS after they were done. Spoiler alert, no cruise speed change. With that out of the way take off acceleration is improved. Climb is better at low speeds but over 110 it is hard to tell a difference. Braking is impressive it goes Mooney to Cherokee with a pull of the throttle. Landing is different, it takes less pressure to keep the nose off the ground. It is incredibly quiet it whistles at taxi speeds, you can have a headset off conversation with people in the back at cruise. It is smoother relatively speaking, you can only make a 4 cylinder Lycoming so smooth but no doubt it is an improvement. After a couple of 3 hour flights the reduced fatigue was noticeable. In my opinion it performs as advertised. How do you rotate pictures? 2 1 Quote

The procedure to rotate a picture is simple. 1: You take your picture. 2: Then find the "@" symbol in your keyboard. 3: With the "@" symbol first, then insert "carusoam" next to the "@" symbol. For example @carusoam 4: Post your picture as normal. 5: Then you wait for a few moments or two, and then magically, your picture will be rotated. Hope this helps. Not a picture rotator. PPL only. 5 1 12 Quote

That method works fantastically here on Mooneyspace to rotate pictures and generally fix problems here. So I figured it might work more broadly. -This year I wrote @ carusoam on my taxes hoping my taxes would get done by Anthony. That didn't work. -I am writing a boring government report right now. I try tried the @carusoam method on it but so far no good. -I need to mow the lawn. @ carusoam. No dice. Anthony is not nearly as helpful as he seems. 2 1 6 Quote

Tim Jodice Posted August 27, 2020 Author Report Posted August 27, 2020 Another benefit is more ground clearance 4 Quote
xcrmckenna Posted August 28, 2020 Report Posted August 28, 2020 12 pounds. Without TKS it would have been 16. Do you have any CG problems with that much weight off the nose, if you put the full 120lbs in the cargo and 10lbs on the hat rack?Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Definitely something you want to include in the new WnB numbers... The Arm isn’t very long... so there is some flexibility with the shift in Cg... Other prop changes will get this type of review for the new WnB... Two vs. three blades... and some topProp hubs are heavier than other hubs.... Pp thoughts only, not a mechanic... xcrmckenna Posted August 28, 2020 Report Posted August 28, 2020 Good to know, I want to upgrade to an MT prop at some point. I haven’t read anything that it throws the cg off but I haven’t actually asked anyone that has done the swap on a J. ThanksSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Quote
flyer338 Posted August 28, 2020 Report Posted August 28, 2020 (edited) My take away from this thread is that a composite three-blade propeller on a J model, with no change to cruise speed, offers 16 lbs of useful load, along with a shorter takeoff roll and better climb. How much does this miracle cost? Edited August 28, 2020 by flyer338 clarity Quote

How much does this miracle cost? The increased climb and shorter takeoff roll are the smaller benefits in my opinion. The decreased noise, and the increased smoothness are the real selling points. at the end of the day a 1 to 2 knot cruise difference, an increase of 100fpm and and a decrease in a couple hundred feet only makes a 5 difference on a thousand NM trip. The real change is when the plane is turbine smooth and significantly quieter. You get to your destination feeling a lot more awake and less fatigued. 2 Quote

If i were to have had it done in NH where I live it would have been $1800 more. $1400 less without TKS. 2 Quote
