hammdo Posted January 11 Author Report Posted January 11 Shipment #1 came in -- Millennium Cylinders, piston pins, alt belt. Shipment 2 is delayed due to the snow storm but hopefully will be here on Monday or Tuesday. The 4th cylinder etc. is already @ the shop since we thought it was the cylinder initially based on borescope. -Don 1 Quote
hammdo Posted January 13 Author Report Posted January 13 Whew, rest is finally in! Will be taking to shop tomorrow. Will get an idea of timeframe and if the shop needs anything else… She should be in much better shape after this. DLC lifters are nice… -Don Quote
hammdo Posted January 13 Author Report Posted January 13 FYI, since the re-org of Superior, they have on shore manufacturing with their subsidiary: https://superioraerospace.net/ I sent an email about where their products are now being machined (after the re-org) and Superior was kind enough to give me the details. So Superior Aerospace does the manufacture and partial assemblies, while the Dallas (Coppell) Location does the rest. I live a few miles from their Coppell location too ;o) -Don 2 Quote

Echo Posted January 13 Report Posted January 13 Quite the saga. Hope all goes well for you Don. You deserve it. Your positive mental attitude through this is very encouraging. Cheers for smooth running power plant. Scott 2 Quote
hammdo Posted January 14 Author Report Posted January 14 I was hoping something like this would have waited a bit longer. I’ve been saving for a big hit but it seems when I go off plan (like leather yokes or autopilot), that is when an event happens. IRAN will freshen things up. I’ve pretty much have done all the other Items as I went along (progressively trying to be ahead of maintenance where it makes sense). I’m just glad I can do this much now. Bottom end should be good, basically new top end. If all goes well, I should still have leeway later to get the AeroCruze installed. Parts go to the shop tomorrow. The AP/IA doing the engine IRAN has decades of experience (semi-retired last year), has built 3 experimental aircraft (and is building one now), and offered to do this for me (5 years I’ve been going to them). The other AP/IA (who bought the other out) has lots of experience too - but likes to do avionics ;o). Thanks for checking in! -Don 2 Quote
hammdo Posted January 14 Author Report Posted January 14 Parts dropped off, had a chance to speak to the APs. They both agree that the lifters must have failed -- intake side. Exhaust showed no signs of issues -- just very odd but not surprising. Engine is already off, AP is gonna mic the crank and if that is ok (which we don't see a reason why it wouldn't since we caught the metal very early), the IRAN will proceed. She's naked: 2 Quote
hammdo Posted January 16 Author Report Posted January 16 Tear down completed. Crank good, gonna freshen it up with new bearings, rod bolts, lifter plungers, 1 pushrod need’s replacing. Lower mount bushings need replacement. Goes to show things can happen even when maintenance is constantly being done. We talked about doing the full OH but 3 to 6 months out and she won’t be hangered. I think just doing the IRAN is best for now. It will be as fresh as one can get. -Don 2 Quote
hammdo Posted January 16 Author Report Posted January 16 What they found on tear down: Spalled lifters happen in the last 60 hours. Last year when we did the #4 cylinder, we saw nothing on the faces/cam. 821 hours since the last IRAN - this is the current condition. Basically, No NDI (non destructive inspection), and no crank polish/line boring will be done. -Don 1 Quote
201Steve Posted January 18 Report Posted January 18 Maybe I’m mistaken, but the coloring of the tappets looks like DLC. I feel like the DLC’s are more black in color. I could be wrong on that… would be interesting to know for sure but it’s unclear to me when Lycoming started doing the DLC. Quote
hammdo Posted January 18 Author Report Posted January 18 Those are the original ones from 1996 when it was a Lycoming factory overhaul. I looked at them and they are not DLC lifters. I also looked at the last IRAN (in 2006 from gear up) and they resurfaced those lifters/cam followers. When I got the DLC lifters, you could tell the difference. My guess those are just dark from use. The faces are very light color vs the DLC one which are very dark/black faces. -Don Quote

hammdo Posted January 20 Author Report Posted January 20 No corrosion found. We checked the cam and lifters last year and nothing on them. My guess is these 4 just failed recently. I fly pretty much weekly, change the oils ~4 times a year so it’s not from that. -Don Quote
hammdo Posted Friday at 03:42 AM Author Report Posted Friday at 03:42 AM Had to order shorter pushrods. Seems new cam and the Millennium Cylinders may cause tighter tolerances. Seems the shop is getting closer! -Don Quote

Rmfriday Posted yesterday at 02:30 AM Report Posted yesterday at 02:30 AM Awesome that was fast, glad I’d for you!! Quote
hammdo Posted yesterday at 02:44 AM Author Report Posted yesterday at 02:44 AM 6 months vs ~3 weeks — I had most of the parts, thankfully. So much is new/replaced or recently overhauled- I’m very hopeful on her running well and breaking in quickly. While not a full overhaul, the repair is about as close as one can get… Prop and governor was IRAN’d/resealed by Byams too a couple of years back.… Mag overhauled, SureFly, exhaust overhauled by Dawley before he retired. Fingers crossed. -Don Quote
