Still cleaning out the hangar. Now I am wondering what these are. The PO literally never threw anything away. My gain in spite of all the detritus--lots of aviation parts and tools, but these have me perplexed.

Lead Wheel weights.

Damn! I thought they looked vaguely familiar. Lots of automotive stuff in the hangar, makes sense.

Collectors items!  They're all made out of zinc now. They're still legal, but you don't see them much.

My dad worked for firestone when I was a kid.  He would bring home 5 gallon buckets full home for our neighbor to cast bullets

Wheel weights they are...

Steel clip with lead cast around it...

Oddly though... lots of erosion on the surface that was in contact with the wheel...

Could be a sign of two dissimilar metals in contact with each other...

Best regards,

Much simpler explanation this time.

Those fell off a wheel, ended up in the street, and got ran over a bunch

Environmental.  EPA has been trying to ban lead weights for a long time.  Some states have.  Industry kinda moved to zinc, but you can still get lead, and they're better.

Most weights are self-adhesive now, too, and tape on the inside of the wheel barrel.    On the race car I put aluminum foil tape over them so the heat from the brakes doesn't melt the adhesive.
