HRM Posted December 6, 2019 Report Posted December 6, 2019 (edited) Trying to loosen the nylon locknut (5/8") on the lower engine mount (see photo) on the pilot side. Any suggestions on how to get at this? We've run out of ideas to include long-reach angled needle-nose pliers. Edited December 6, 2019 by HRM added nut size Quote

It's at a weird angle in there. I think the problem is that 5/8" sockets are made 'hefty' to accommodate the torques possible on that sized hardware. To get on that nut you thin and long (in terms of the handle holding the socket). <sigh> Quote

If you’ve got a mechanic handy with different brands of sockets, you might try that route. Quote
N201MKTurbo Posted December 6, 2019 Report Posted December 6, 2019 I ground down the box end of an end wrench till it fit. Use a socket on the bolt. 3 Quote

I've replaced the mounts on my "E" but don't remember having any issues using Snap-On wrenches & sockets.... I've turned down the O.D. on several sockets in the past, lathe works best but a grinder works as well Quote

I am starting to see a pattern develop here, the Snap-On wrenches apparently are slimmer and fit into tight spaces easily. There is just absolutely no room for less than the tightest fit. I am probably going to have to grind something down to get up in there. Quote

Guest Posted December 7, 2019 Report Posted December 7, 2019 Any reasonable quality box end wrench ground down to thin the box will fit in. Snap On wrenches will fit with no grinding. Snap On OEX series wrenches( short but not stubby length) are your best friend in airplane maintenance. Clarence Quote

From the age of 16ish till I was 25ish, the Snap-On guy got at least$20.00 a week.....lol...Money well spent Quote
