Just a note for any Mooniacs with JPI's EDM-730 or 830 engine monitors.....

JPI releases free firmware updates for these units every six weeks, it seems! The current EDM-7/830 firmware version is V3.29. They also have an updated Application Loader for 7/830 versions earlier than V3.17. All the information you need is here:

Also, the plotting program EZtrends from JPI gets updated regularly, too. The current version is 1.0.4171 for Win XP, and there are versions for other OS's, here:

Since 7/830s are advisory instruments, I would say performing these updates would be well within the realm of owner preventative maintenance.

For those with "primary certification instruments" units like the 930....not so sure. The list of 32 items in FAR Part 43, Appendix A, Paragraph C - Preventive Maintenance does not include performing firmware updates on primary indicating instruments. Take a look:

Hope this helps someone.....

They had $500 rebates  at oshkosh.  They are also working on getting the 830 certified as primary.  They have already submitted it twice, but it was rejected.  The FAA seems to think the screen is  to small.

An 830 as a primary would be huge (in terms of benefit, anyway). No more wet-line fuel pressure and oil pressure lines in the cockpit. 201JX has had fuel line ruptures in the cockpit twice, no fire luckily Surprised

JPI told me they are currently rearranging some stuff on the display and are going to submitt it again.  They would like to see it approved, but could not make any promises.  They did say that it should just be a software upgrade and paperwork for people who already owned them.
