Good morning all,

I am a new member, joined so I can seek out information on the whole Mooney Ownership experience. I have some tome in the E models (really loved flying them).

My situation is I live in Kansas, work out of KDEN (3.5 hour drive if wx is good), would rather fly to KFTG, and trying to get myself in a financial position to pull it off.

Im trying to research the feasibility of a Mooney with a TKS system. I would like to have the option of shedding ice and not being in too much of a bind. So that said my first question is: how much does a tks typically add to the annual inspection? Would you consider it to be a reliable system?

thank you much and I look forward to hearing from you all

Good land (KGLD) KS to Denver by Mooney is right at an hour +/-.  You might update your profile to state which airport in KS you plan on departing from on a regular basis.

Are you looking for daily commute or weekly?  I think a weekly commute would be more reasonable and practical and lets you plan for weather better while keeping the option to go home for an event during the week if necessary.

Mooney with TKS are rare especially certified for flying in know icing conditions (FIKI).  I would tread very lightly in those conditions even with FIKI but then I  am a southern boy who very rarely has to worry about ice and I only have the barest minimum icing equipment on my plane.

good luck and welcome aboard.

KOIN, Ile look into updating my profile

Right now I do a weekly commute. Hopefully in the near future it will be every two weeks.

Please elaborate on the issues with a TKS in icing. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not the guy who wants to stick around in icing conditions. I’m also not wanting to be restricted when conditions are favorable to ice (provided were not talking about heavy ice or freezing rain)

good luck and welcome aboard.

Thank you very much! Happy to be here!!

Hey Brian,

Welcome aboard...

The usual way things work around here... there are many knowledgeable people....

The more they know about you, the more comfortable they are making recommendations... :)

Very often, we will get some people that have all the interest, but have no flying experience at all...

New guys are challenged with running out of fuel... and flying VFR into IMC...

Experienced guys fly into thunderstorms and icing conditions...

It may be really helpful to detail some of your experience.  In the event that you don’t have the experience you might detail how you are going to get the experience...

... and if you have no experience, that is good to know too... because we can give some recommendations on how to get that too.  :)

When it comes to buying a Mooney...Most people will ask what your primary and secondary missions are...

TKS is expensive icing on the cake....  the FIKI version is top of the line Mooney territory...

Have no fear discussing budgets and prices... they will often be coded...  a good Ovation is about 200 amu.... a Fiki one will be a touch more...

Want to see a bunch of Mooneys that are for sale..? There is an organization that sells Mooneys in Texas called All American Aircraft...

Hope That is helpful for you... It was supposed to be helpful... :)

Best regards,

-a-
