aerobat95 Posted April 21, 2011 Report Posted April 21, 2011 Today was supposed to be a nice 3 hour flight from wichita to Columbus, MS. Unfortunately there was a line of sever thunderstorms in the way. Now I am stuck on a 12 hour drive.....I really hate driving.

kerry Posted April 22, 2011 Report Posted April 22, 2011 What I really hate is when you end up driving because of questionable weather, but while driving it seems the weather isn't that bad and you keep looking at the sky thinking it would of been a great flight.
jelswick Posted April 22, 2011 Report Posted April 22, 2011 I agree Kerry, but I've also left my Mooney in some mighty fine locations (Sportys in Batavia, OH, KCRW in WV, etc.) to drive the last hour or two because I didn't beat the weather home and been very thankful in the car that I didn't risk trying to push my luck in what turned out really horrible weather. It stinks when what you described happens, but always better to err on the side that guarantees you'll get to fly another day.
DaV8or Posted April 22, 2011 Report Posted April 22, 2011 It's been said and typed many times before, but I'll type it again- It's better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air than in the air wishing you were on the ground.
N33GG Posted April 22, 2011 Report Posted April 22, 2011 Living here in Texas, many of my flights are reduced to driving because of the risk of hail at the other airport with outdoor tie downs. Usually does not hail, but when it does, I sure am glad my aircraft is safe in a hangar. My flying is often between three specific airports, and one of them is just west of Fort Worth. I recently purchased a hangar lot there and am going to build a second hangar just to allow more flying without the risk of hail. Just can't stand the thought of my Mooney getting pounded!

MARZ Posted April 22, 2011 Report Posted April 22, 2011 Can't wait for the IFR rating - my options are limited to A and C.
RJBrown Posted April 22, 2011 Report Posted April 22, 2011 What is worst is a beautiful flight out followed by a car ride back and forth to a nice flight home. Last fall I flew Denver's APA to St George Utah. Drove 9 hours each way. home on Sunday and back on Friday to retrieve the plane. Two CAVU flights surrounding what was really strange weather for the desert.
Parker_Woodruff Posted April 22, 2011 Report Posted April 22, 2011 When I sold my Mooney and thru February I was driving 3500-4500 miles per month. It was torture.

scottfromiowa Posted April 22, 2011 Report Posted April 22, 2011 I drive 30-35k BUSINESS miles a year...Having a plane in the hanger on a sunny day and going to a city that has a courtesy car is NOT fun...when you have a DON'T use plane for company business policy where you work. A lot of time to think about upgrades...
aerobat95 Posted April 22, 2011 Author Report Posted April 22, 2011 Well if I had waited until today to leave it looks like I would have been able to fly. Would have had to go IFR but it would have been VFR on top. plus I would have gotten there at the same time. Oh well. At least I have more Hilton points :-)
Hank Posted April 22, 2011 Report Posted April 22, 2011 While you're in Mississippi, you may want to look up the Quiet Technologies people. I bought their Halo lightweight headset at Christmas, and love it! They're on sale again now . . . 10% off. Too bad I don't have any financial interest in the good Doctor's company.
