Does anyone have any suggestions for repair of the factory electric tachometer in a J model?  I have a customer with a tachometer with a nervous needle.  We're hoping find a repair and to not have to replace it with something different, although we will if that's the only option.

I never did like the needle indicator, so replaced it with the Horizon digital tach.  Very nice, not that expensive, easy to read tach drops on run-up.  Very reliable.

On later J serial numbers the electric tachometer is 2-1/4" while the Horizon tachometer is 3-1/8".  Not an easy fit.

I don't know if Rudy Aircraft Instruments works on those, but they did a great job on my Attitude Indicator.

When my mechanical tach went out, I trplaced it with a UMA tach and I've been very happy with it.

I don't know if they have a 2 1/4 inch PMA tach, but it would be worth giving them a call.

I think I have a Mooney 2 1/4 inch electric tach indicator on the shelf at the hangar. I don't know it's condition.

Sadly, it is most often the tach generator which goes bad.  No one makes replacements.  This is the small unit that is attached to the accessory case at the back of the engine, and sends a voltage signal to the display, which is basically a calibrated voltmeter.

We replaced ours with an EI electronic tach when our factory tach generator gave up the ghost!

I have a 2 1/4 inch Umi.  The sensor mounts to an unused port on one of the mags.  I replaced an EI electronic tach that the previous owner installed.  I really hated that thing.  The LCD display was hard to read and all the leds made it look like something better suited to a pinball machine than a Mooney.

Maurauder has / had an EI 2-1/4 tach that was very nice.  I’d suggest going that way.  Something new for the approximate cost of overhaul.
