IPAD2

My younger brother works at the apple store, and understood my decision to wait until the "2" version.  He has the first generation iPad and I admit it is a fantastic piece of equipment.  I've been watching what it can do for the cockpit and when my laptop quits, the iPad2 will be it's replacement.  The iPad 2 is not a true laptop, but with a home computer, iPad2 and maybe a bluetooth keyboard, it will do just fine - the avaition apps and mounting in the cockpit are a pure bonus!

Yes, the USB would have been nice.  Apple offers a package of 2 plug in modules for $30.  One is USB and one is an SD card.

Even if they had a good solution for printing, it could go to a WI-FI printer.  Sounds like a good printing App will get the job done.

Could any one answer this question...to take advantage of the Foreflight functionality i.e. your current position on a sectional, would I have to purchase the iPad 2 w/ the 3G service or would the WiFi only model sufice.  I guess my real question is do both the models 3G vice WiFi+3G both have a built in GPS?

The non 3g does not have an assisted GPS.  However you can get the wi-fi only an use and external GPS such as the Bad Elf.  The Bad Elf GPS is only $99.00 and is well worth it even if you do get the 3g model.  The internal gps chip is not very reliable for flying.  I will try to post a picture.

For all to consider, I upgraded to the ForeFlight HD subscription with digital IAPs and taxiways when it came out a few weeks ago. Had a chance to give it a good tryout today when I went up with my CFI-I for some refresher work. Although I spent more time looking at the gauges than normal (dang that "malfunctioning" auto-pilot!) she was dutifully impressed with how the IAPs worked in FF. Even though she'd never seen the app before in her life, she was able to easily learn how to navigate the UI and get to the approach plates, and used our real-time positioning to help vector me around on several of our practice approaches with ease.
