mranson Posted February 8, 2011 Report Posted February 8, 2011 I just decided to make a significant upgrade from a C182 to a Mooney Rocket. I am 350 hr instrument pilot and live in Charleston WV with limited flight instruction opportunities in the area. I know several CFI's in the area that instruct in high performance aircraft such as Cirrus and Columbias, but I would like to locate an instructor that has a lot of time in a Mooney and prefer one who has extensive knowledge and experience in the Rocket conversion. I am a very busy professional, but would be willing to travel to adjacent states on the weekend to receive good instruction. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks MTR Quote
Mcstealth Posted February 10, 2011 Report Posted February 10, 2011 Hey Zeph. This is right up your alley!!! Welcome to the forum mranson. Other than myself, there are mostly knowledgable and respectful members here. Watch out for Parker though. He can get a little.............. Quote
Hank Posted February 11, 2011 Report Posted February 11, 2011 Welcome to the club! I'll ask my former partner if he knows of any Mooney-specific instructors in the area. He spends a lot of time in his A-36 now. Another resource to check with in Charleston would be Col. Peters. He's very knowledgable and very experienced, and has always been pleasant and professional to work with. Someone there at the airport or FBO should be able to put you in touch with him. Quote
cwright27 Posted February 12, 2011 Report Posted February 12, 2011 Hello MRanson, I'm new to the forum and live in Charleston as well. I have a 1966 M20C that I keep at Exec Aviation. I'm not a civilian instructor but I've been meaning to get that done. I fly C-130's in the air guard across the ramp. I'd be more than happy to chat or go flying with you sometime. I know Bill Peters and he'd be a good choice for instruction. If you want to work on some instrument stuff I'd be more than happy. Take care. Chris Wright N2671W Quote
mranson Posted February 13, 2011 Author Report Posted February 13, 2011 Thanks for the response Chris and Hank. I actually have trained with Col Peters and passed both of my check rides with him as my DPE. I did speak to him about training several months ago when I was contemplating the purchase of the Rocket and he was unable to commit to the training because of his many responsibilities as a corporate pilot and DPE. I did hear about a CFI at Yeager named Mark Loudermilk. He apparently has a lot of time in Mooneys and used to be a commercial pilot. I thought I might contact him when I get back from Utah. Chris, I really appreciate your offer to help with the instrument transition. I will be basing the plane at Yeager in the next several weeks. I am trying to talk Scott Miller into putting it in a hangar without the bird infestation. I still have a hangar at Mallory but I am not going to fly the Mooney into a 1900 ft runway with little go around options. Send me your email and I will contact you after I am checked out and have some solo time in the Rocket. Matt Quote
jelswick Posted February 20, 2011 Report Posted February 20, 2011 Great to see so many Mooney folks in WV! I went to high school in Winfield after my father finished his Army career and prior to leaving for USMA myself. Loved West Virginia and good to see this many Mooney people so close by (I'm in Columbus, OH area). Quote

cwright27 Posted March 2, 2011 Report Posted March 2, 2011 Hello Matt. I'm back in country and took a look at your rocket in the hangar today. She's a fine looking bird. Shoot me an email and we'll chat. Chris Wright cwright27@ymail.com Quote
aviatoreb Posted April 4, 2011 Report Posted April 4, 2011 Are there any rocket specific instructors in the Northeast, like New England area? Quote
mranson Posted April 4, 2011 Author Report Posted April 4, 2011 Mark Lowdermilk transitioned me from a C182 to a Mooney Rocket in less than 10 hrs. I have flown with a few instructors throughout the years and find his instruction techniques to be of the highest professional level and effectiveness. He is a DPE and corporate pilot with lots of time in commercial jets (ie 737). I highly recommend him for transitioning training in your Rocket. He lives in WV but frequently works in DC. Let me know if you are interested and I will forward you his email. Quote
