Allen Folding Bikes-SOLD

Trying to do some early fall shop/hanger cleaning..

I posted a year or so ago when we bought these thinking the other half an I might use them on trips. Never seemed to happen this past year and we've been busy. Looking like next year will not slow down much. .We've decided if we are going to take bikes we will take our road bikes and figure a way to make them fit in the back seat/cargo. These folding bikes are virtually brand new..I think one of them was brand new when I bought it. The other near brand new.

We took a short ride around the hood to see how we like them when we first got them, but other than that they have been stored in carry bags. I'll post some pics up shortly, but wanted to toss this info and ad out there. I know we have some very avid bicycle riders on the forum, but I also know most of us Mooney guys are frugal (CB), so they might do better on Fleabay, but I'd rather cut a better deal for a MS who will use them. If by chance someone is looking for a higher end folding bike here are two in near new condition. I'll post up some details later this evening, but the website pretty well covers the details. I'm a pretty active EBay guy with 1300+ auctions and all 100%. These are nice and the real deal. If someone buys both I'll toss in a car carrier/rack. As usual...I'm sure I will come out on the short-end, but we have yet to use them and my new "motto" as I clean out the shop and garage..haven't used it in a year, it needs a new home!! Tired of clutter.

Tom -- how to these compare to riding a road bike? I have an interest. I rode the Dahons that a Mooney owner owns here. Thought they were okay but not sure I would want to put 20 to 25 miles on them. Are these in the same class in terms of performance?

Giving a honest answer is tough for me. I ride my road bike only occasionally. I'm not a avid rider, but having said that my road bike is a Fuju Transonic and to me as far as road feel it is actually pretty close between the carbon folding and my Fuji. If you remember I had first purchased a Dahon and another folder ( I forgot the name of the 2nd bike) before buying these Allen's and actually sold the Dahon to one of our MS guys. If comparing these Allen to the Dahon I can say it was much easier to peddle my fat arse around on the these vs. the Dahon that I had. No much of an explanation, but Sheila rides her road bike to the gym nearly every day when the weather permits. She was very impressed with these Allens when we took a stroll around the hood. She actually doesn't  want me to sell them. If I could get her as excited to fly then we might not be selling these so quickly. I just don't see it in the cards and I just can't justify this nice of a bike as a "once in a while bike". One hurdle at a time..get her to fly, then we worry about how we are going to get the a bicycle wherever we might be headed. Long explanation, but you get the idea..

Tom -- thanks for the explanation. The reason for the interest is that my wife and I do fly routinely and we always comment on how nice it would be to take our road bikes with us. I finally took the time to figure out how my reclining seats come out. With them out, there may room to put my full size bikes in the area. I just haven't had time to see if they will fit. If that doesn't work, having a bike that can be stowed away makes sense. I wish you were a little closer so I could give them a try. Let me talk it over with my wife and see what she thinks.

BTW -- are they sized for the rider? I have a large frame road bike (I think it is a 60 cm) and my wife's bike is a 48 cm.

I have not seen these Allen bikes before, interesting.

I looked at the specs page for these bikes and am having a hard time imaging how they shed 5 pounds in the handlebars, seat/seatpost, rims, crankset and pedals, between the highest and second highest mod of the bikes.

Also interesting to me that they use mtb components instead of road components.

I have a fair amount of experience hauling bikes around in the plane and it's not convenient just due to the loading through the passenger door.

With the bike folded up can you load it through the baggage door?

If Chris doesn't buy them I might be interested in the Carbon frame one.

I bought Tom's previous bikes, the Dahon's, and we have loved having them.  Having easy short range transportation right with you, that is also fun to ride, has added to our getaways.  If we rent a car somewhere, we put the bikes in the car, and use wherever we go.  

We enjoy relaxed biking, not high speed road biking, so consider that perspective.  Everyone is different, but we ride over 10 miles round trip around the airport, comfortably, even with simple single speed models.  I have tried out some premium folding bikes with multi-speed hubs, and I forget I am on a folder until I look down.

I typically have at least one rear seat out of the plane, since I seldom have a need for 4.  So loading the folded bike through the cabin door is so easy, I have not even tried the baggage hatch with the Dahon's.

You guys were a long ways from home..lol   They have done most of the work on my Mooney..They don't like it, but they've been doing it  complain, complain, but when it comes to avionics they do a good job. Wish I knew you were in the area. Could have grabbed lunch over here at KDYR - 5 min across the river.

Went to KTKX after that, then to M01, sent the O3 student back to Mountain home, another successful 4 days of IFR work! Back to Florida soon and out of this humidity and heat
