My Garmin Pilot (running on Android Nexus 7) has a bug after yesterday's software update.  The altitude slider for the wind barbs (on the map page as an overlay) is now stuck at 42000...and doesn't move to show winds at other altitudes.  I also think the data is wrong too as to what it shows....I compared the data to the ADDS winds data at 42000 and not the same.  However, the wx data from Garmin shows it is properly updating.

Curious if others are seeing this same issue or is it unique to my tablet?

Are you able to send a Pirep to Garmin Pilot people as well?

i know WingX likes to hear directly from their users as quickly as they goof something up.

I have Garmin Pilot on my Samsung S3. On power up the slider would not change altitude for the first three minutes. Try running it for 5 minutes or more and then try moving the slider.

Ok...tried that!  It moved...once.  Now stuck again at 24000 which is where I moved it.  Let it sit for a few minutes...still stuck at 24000.  Likely a software bug since it worked before the update.

I have always seen some form of quirkiness with the wind alt slider. It never permanently stuck, but won't move for a while, a minute or so. It's not as bad anymore but I still notice it.

While on the subject of Garmin Pilot, they just released the latest release, 8.4. 

One of the new features is a glide range ring and I was wondering if there's a rule of thumb glide ratio for an early 80's J model that I can plug into it.

Another new feature, which has been available in ForeFlight for a while, is approach plate overlay on the map.

The last change is the ability to quickly enter a trip into the system graphically and send it to the Trip Planner, by pressing the current leg window that's on the top of the screen when the map is displayed. I will be using this a lot instead of the cumbersome Trip Planning screen.

Ideas for FlyB,

Buster's new book covers glide ratios and what effects it. Unfortunately he gives numbers specific to brand B.  He was expressing glide distance forward per 1000' of altitude.

The POH also has glide ratios in it with guidelines for weight, speed, gear up, throttle out...

I like the sound of the glide ring combined with actual Mooney glide ratios.

For glide ratio I use 2nm for every 1000ft with no flaps, gear retracted and 90kts. Easy to remember.

Here is what that glide ring looks like on the app. It appears to have taken wind & terrain into consideration for determining the range.

Any idea what the wind was at the time?  Graphically it appears to be a bit of a headwind...

Makes you want to pull the throttle and glide toward miflintown to see if you can make it! :)

Meanwhile, I got all kinds of responses to my question on what I should plug in as a default value, all of them different. Is there a general consensus like 9:1 or 10:1?

Anthony -- I sure do know what the winds were! My Aspen had them pegged at 300° at 30 knots. Was fighting a quartering headwind the whole flight out.

I think the way I understood it from my POH?

10:1 not very clean...  For fast math

12:1 cleaned up with the prop stopped.

 

The problems with the fast math method.

- not updated for wind or changes in the terrain.

- not updated continuously.

- might not start at even miles above the ground.

- not enough accuracy to select an airport further out over a nice field nearby.

- glide ratio doesn't take into account lighter than gross weights.

 

it seems to require a computer connected to weather info to make better use of 'known' glide ratios.

 

how would we better ascertain actual glide ratios of known weights in our individual planes?

it is a bit of a challenge to do a four course (or even a three course) method while gliding...

Pp ideas, not a CFI...

Update: Garmin tech support suggested to check that I had the latest software version (I did) and if not then update.  Second, if that didn't work, to uninstall and reinstall the app (I did that).  No change.  Someone else on the AOPA forums said they were having the same problem with their Nexus 7 device running Pilot.  At least I know it's not a problem specific to my set up.

Great Pirep CQ.

1) update: operating system version...

2) update: app version...

3) system: hard on/off/on...

4) empty all the apps that are sitting in memory operating in the background.

 

This is based on my apple experience.  It may be an assumption that all electronic devices and their apps have similar challenges. :)

Probably good advise, but sometimes even that doesn't work. I was out last week practicing approaches and Pilot crashed in the middle of the approach (no other programs were running). Although it started right up again (but not before asking if I wanted to send the error report to Garmin), I didn't have time to re-enter the approach. Another good reason to carry paper, even if it means printing off the approaches you expect to fly at your destination.

That is the difference between an FAA certified/approved GPS navigator and one that is not. At least Pilot indicated that it was not working, others just freeze with no warning. When in IMC on approach I set NAV1 on GPS and NAV 2 on ILS and cross check both. On final I cross check the baro corrected altimeter reading with GPS altitude, both should read equal.

Update...

Apparently the scroll bar does work...it just doesn't respond after start-up for a while.  I left my GP running on my desk...after trying to move the scroll bar after wx download and it was stuck at 420000.  30 min later, it now moves.  Weird.

Same here, both times it was when I selected the Airport page, after accepting a flightplan update from my Flightstream.

Also, the DisCum values are wrong:

While on the subject of Garmin Pilot, I need a new iPAD Mini. As far as iPAD features go, does Garmin Pilot require that the iPAD have the cellular feature or can I get away with buying one that doesn't have the cellular guts?
