crxcte Posted October 4, 2010 Report Posted October 4, 2010 The new implementation of ADSB for traffic, flight information, and weather has already occurred in in many locations (FL, Gulf, AK, etc). Anyone know what it will take to get the weather and information? I know the GTX330 will get the traffic for a 530w or 430w but wonder what is coming down from design on new systems that will support ADSB. Anyone have any recommendations for owners? Quote
flyguy241 Posted October 4, 2010 Report Posted October 4, 2010 A radio shop that really wants to sell me new garmin radios actually told me to hold off on a transponder. He is thinking they are not through with changes to ADS-B and we have some time before we have to do anything. Quote
scottfromiowa Posted October 4, 2010 Report Posted October 4, 2010 The Aviation Consumer has an extensive article this month regarding ADS-B covering requirements/equipment etc. They seem to agree that the FAA is leaning toward being stringent with MFR's regarding guidelines and compliance with equipment for certified and experimental aircraft...They said (and I agree) that a LOT can/will happen with avionics in the ten years up to mandatory implementation of requirements. Portables were also discussed. The WAAS issue may be forced upon us by mandate with the ultimate roll-out. My tanks are full and I am in a serious holding pattern while this gets sorted and new faces emerge...and prices come down. A decade is like a million years in avionics. Weather and Traffic (with NO subscription fee) are the carrots dangled for the significant investment to achieve compliance. Check it out...Online subscription available and WILL pay for itself in keeping you current on the latest/greatest in ALL things aviation. No Paul B is NOT my uncle. Quote
crxcte Posted October 4, 2010 Author Report Posted October 4, 2010 Thanks for the info. I bought a GTX330 with Mode S about 9 months ago and really like it. Almost scarry to see all the traffic out there that I never received alerts from ATC. The upgrade to ADSB is $1200, just sending in to Garmin through a dealer. No work required on the plane. Quote
scottfromiowa Posted October 4, 2010 Report Posted October 4, 2010 In Conclusion magazine article says: "As for dealing with the mandate, we're still not budging in our advice to sit tight. A lot can happen both technologically and regulatory in 10 years. What you buy today might NOT be what you need tomorrow..." Quote

jmills Posted October 5, 2010 Report Posted October 5, 2010 Quote: KLRDMD Lots of things can happen in the next few years. For now, I'm probably going with SkyRadar input to my iPad. I'll get weather and traffic for no charge so it will pay for itself in a couple of years (compared to the Aviator package through XM weather). Quote
FlyDave Posted October 5, 2010 Report Posted October 5, 2010 Quote: jmills I was thinking the same thing, Ken. Any plans to get it soon? If so, I'd like your thoughts after you acquire and use it a bit. I've got the iPad 3G and like it so far. Quote

crxcte Posted October 6, 2010 Author Report Posted October 6, 2010 I think this side of the pond is more concerned with security and enterance into the US and ADSB gives them that ability. The current coverage is a little than what was on your link. http://www.faa.gov/about/office_org/headquarters_offices/ato/service_units/enroute/surveillance_broadcast/coverage/ Quote
Guillaume Posted October 6, 2010 Report Posted October 6, 2010 Quote: Vref http://www.trig-avionics.com/ta60.html'> Anyway in europe:The non-ADS-B traffic and weather information upload shall reach initial operation phase in 2011.(Whatever this means..) Quote
Vref Posted October 6, 2010 Report Posted October 6, 2010 Quote: Guillaume Where did you read that ? It would be good move for GA in europe. If TIS-B (over 1090ES) is provided in europe, the Trig TA60 series ADS-B receiver looks promising. Quote
