Beale was using RW 33, light NW winds.  Pilot said it was smooth as glass.

Are you suggesting that when Al was at Lockheed he influenced Kelly Johnson?  Wouldn't that be something...

Do the years he was there line up with U-2 development?

He went to Lockheed in 1955.  Wikipedia says the U-2's first flight was also in 1955, so probably no collaboration. 

But definitely a case of great minds think alike.

If he were there, it would have the tail the other way around, manual gear, a Brittain PC, and be a bit underpowered.

I don't think the U2 was ever called over powered but incredible to watch those wings lift it into the sky

Could be he stole the idea from the U2 :-)

Used to watch them leave KVNY in the 60s They were modified there in the big Lockheed hangars on the east side
