triple8s Posted August 9, 2015 Report Posted August 9, 2015 I had to get radio work done a couple of years ago and bit the bullet. I spent the extra and bought the 330ES which I thought would be the end of it. Was really nice, easy to operate has nice features, also I had traffic which was displayed on my IPad and my G430. Well over the last few months I have noticed I don't see traffic much anymore, just occationally. I had been wondering why then I read this: A: Maybe. If ALL of the following are true, you’ll get TIS-B/ADS-R Traffic: - Your ADS-B transmitter has to comply with the most recent version of ADS-B out (currently version 3). Note that the present version of the Garmin 330 is not of the latest standard, so it is our understanding that users of Garmin 330ES with ADS-B Out will NOT receive TIS-B/ADS-R - Your transmitter must also have the appropriate configuration to indicate receive capability on either 1090 MHz, 978 MHz, or both. Then you‘ll receive TIS-B on the indicated receive channel. If your equipment states receive capability on both 978 MHz and 1090 MHz, you’ll receive TIS-B on only 978 MHz. You’ll also receive ADS-R on the indicated receive channel. Clarity receives on both 978 MHz and 1090 MHz. So does this mean we that have the 330ES are going to be extorted by garmin for software updates on transponders too???? Quote
M20F-1968 Posted August 9, 2015 Report Posted August 9, 2015 So I have a recently upgraded 330 now 330ES, is there additional software or upgrades I need to install? Is there a contact number for Garmin tech support where you do not need to wait forever to get someone to answer? John Breda Quote
BigTex Posted August 9, 2015 Report Posted August 9, 2015 Maybe I'm missing something but your GTX330ES/GNS430 combo will not provide any ADS-B In traffic without a GDL-88. Your combo only complies with the 2020 ADS-B out requirement. What you will get when in and around Class Bravo airspace is TIS-A, not TIS-B traffic. It looks similar on the display but when you get 30-40 miles outside Class B airspace, you'll loose all traffic. Quote

Alan Fox Posted August 9, 2015 Report Posted August 9, 2015 You will get it all on the stratus/IPAD Quote
triple8s Posted August 9, 2015 Author Report Posted August 9, 2015 I have a Dual X170gps/adsb box and I was getting lots of traffic on my 430, IPad mini w/FlyQ as well as on my S5 running Avare, key word is was. Now I get traffic on the 430 ONLY when in the terminal areas, (KATL, KBNA, KCLT etc) I have been seriously considering the Skywatch 497, now considering it even more seriously. Quote
Marauder Posted August 9, 2015 Report Posted August 9, 2015 Got to love ADS-B... And they wonder why people are waiting on the mandate. From what what you posted, early ES versions may not be capable of triggering the current "out" signal for ADS-B. If that is the case then, it looks like you need a firmware update. If your 330ES is transmitting correctly, then your 430 will receive TIS-A if you are in an area that has the TIS-A radars. Your ADS-B "in" unit will receive TIS-B (and FIS-B since they give us that already) on your iPad with the app that works with it. So... my guess is if you are not seeing everything, you may be seeing TIS-A on your 430 and limited FIS-B like those without an "out" source. On Garmin Pilot, if I am parasitizing on someone's "out" signal, I will get both of these boxes lighted up Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote

It appears that you are only getting TIS-A traffic (1090MHZ) but not TIS-B traffic (978MHZ) from a ground UAT station. Try at a different location or higher altitude. You may not be within range of a UAT station. I have the Traffic-Watch that shows traffic in the pattern even when inside the hangar José Quote
