Don't worry, you'll hear no political rant from me. And Little Timmy is no friend of mine, but...

... as of this morning only ONE of our Senators has signed on as a co-sponsor of the PBOR2. That is an embarrassment!

Senator Inhofe has vowed to bring this to the floor for a vote if he can secure 60 co-sponsors (currently at 56). See https://www.congress.gov/bill/114th-congress/senate-bill/571/cosponsors?q=%7B%22search%22%3A%5B%22%5C%22s571%5C%22%22%5D%7D&resultIndex=1

Ted Cruz needs to be convinced to join as a co-sponsor, and the only way that will happen is if his constituency speaks up, and LOUDLY.

You may have sent an e-mail, or clicked a link from AOPA/EAA, but have you taken 60 seconds to CALL his Washington office? The phone number is: 202-224-5922. You don't have to talk to a real person; just leave the requested info and tell him to SUPPORT PBOR2 by signing on as a co-sponsor!

Mr. Cruz has vowed to represent the voters, so tell him it's time to sign on as a co-sponsor! Call him now at: 202-224-5922.

Okay, I'm now stepping down from my soapbox. Thanks.

For the life of me, I do not understand why Cruz has not already signed on.  He should be all for the freedom angle of this legislation.  I strongly suspect there is some dotted line there we don't know about.  Watching politics is like watching sausage being made... not very pleasant or appetizing!

My voice has, and continues to be heard on this issue.

Phone call is the way to go on deals like this. I've wiggled some laws around and additionally talked to a bunch of staffers, and they all tell me that a phone call is much more effective than an email. I'll be calling tomorrow morning.

Thank you to all who took action on this!

In case you missed it, AOPA just sent out the following note:

"As you may know, your Senator Ted Cruz is now a cosponsor of the Pilot’s Bill of Rights 2! If you are among the tens of thousands of AOPA members who contacted their elected officials and asked them to support PBR2, thank you! Your action has made a tangible difference in the fight for third-class medical reform and protections for general aviation pilots."

It's about friggin' time!

I am not a Ted Cruz fan, but I will give him credit for jumping in when I and (almost certainly) others contacted him about it.

Talked to the sales rep a couple of days ago she says this is getting lost in the furor over here in 3-D and continuing funding issue for Congress not to get our hopes up. For me this is much more important than either of those issues

So ???

George ???

Like it has been said we are nearing the end of the year with many other more important things that congress needs to do.

If we do not get this voted on and approved this year we are back to square 0 and have to restart the process all over next year.

Is AOPA formulating a backup plan?

1. Refile same bill early next year? and hope for better results that will be the 3rd or 4th time they have tried this (see definition of insanity)

2. Plan B file new legislation that gets the Feds out of the medical business for all medicals 1st through 3rd class.  We should be able to get more support across the board from all pilots.

3. You would still need a physical (satisfies the opponents to eliminating the 3rd class physical)  but you and your doctor alone decide if you are fit to fly not some bureaucrat in OK.  No paperwork to file with the gov't just you and your doctor.

4.  The only thing the feds do is provide check list of what procedures need to be performed at the initial physical 1st, 2nd & 3rd.  If there is an issue then you and your doctor work it out.  THE FEDS do not dictate followup.

5. First class can be a minimum of once a year while 2nd and 3rd the doctor and pilot make that decision as to when the next physical is needed based on that individuals condition.

6. Airlines, operators and individual pilots can opt for more than the minimum if they so choose.

The bill was introduced in Jan 2015 in the 114th session of congress. The 114th session last until jan 2017, so they have until then to bring it up for vote

Another co sponsor added yesterday. Up to 58 now.

I was thinking they had until the end of the year.

YES Major gutting of the bill!!!!

It is still better than nothing but the changes listed still keeps the bureaucrats in power which is what the PBRII was supposed to eliminate.

Very discouraging to see one of my state senators, a former naval aviator is not on the list supporting the bill.

If you live in New York - I forgot I sent my senator an email like late Spring. And never heard a thing.  I guess they do work at that office and it took this long for them to take a position - I am actually surprised that they are organized enough to record who emailed specific positions and to respond back months later.

Here is the note:

Dear Dr. Bollt:
Thank you for contacting me to express your support for S. 571, the Pilot’s Bill of Rights 2. I agree with you about the importance of assuring the vitality of the general aviation industry while also maintaining robust safety standards.

As you know, general aviation is a large and vibrant industry in New York and across the country, which serves as an important economic driver in many local communities. According to the FAA, there are nearly 16,000 active pilots in New York State. And according to the General Aviation Manufacturers Association’s 2014 report, New York ranks ninth in the nation in terms of total jobs attributable to general aviation. I believe that it is important for the federal government to support the general aviation community and maintain strong safety measures.

The Pilot’s Bill of Rights 2 was introduced by Senator Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma. The legislation would amend the Pilot’s Bill of Rights, which was signed into law in 2012. The bill would reform the third class medical certification requirements for certain pilots, among other legislative changes. The Pilot’s Bill of Rights 2 was referred to the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation in February 2015. While I am not a member of this committee, I will continue to monitor this bill as it moves through the Senate.

Again, thank you for contacting me about this important issue. Please feel free to contact me in the future if I can be of further assistance on this or any other matter.

Sincerely,

Charles E. Schumer
United States Senator

Does that mean he has signed on to support it or just that he's going to watch it......

never mind - found it

New York

Neither Senator is currently a cosponsor

Nice letter .......

Darn - he almost fooled me -

I'd rather he had said nothing rather than lied to me and tried to trick me.  I don't see the point in telling a lie to me to try to lead me to think he is supporting when he is not - since surely people will find out and he will loose more ground in voters eyes than simply either saying he is against it, or at least saying nothing, or maybe that he is still thinking about it - but trying to trick me - not impressed.

Schumer has never been pro aviation. So his response is not surprising. It is called Politic Speak for the politically correct and for the rest of us, it is politician bullsh$t talk.

I did get Carper's response last Spring as well. Same non-commitment double talk.

Well its not normal English as used by normal people.  I don't care if its politician double take.  Normal people call it lying.  I am normal people - I am calling it lying.
