Loogie Posted August 1, 2015 Report Posted August 1, 2015 Flying my bride to KGVQ Batavia on tue, we have to fly back to VA on thur 6th, any suggestions to stop for a nice lunch? Was thinking Skeneatlas but airport doesn't have courtesy car, any cool suggestions? Quote
aviatoreb Posted August 1, 2015 Report Posted August 1, 2015 which airport are you going from and to while stopping? from where I'm from kgvq is quite southern part of "upstate". lake placid klkp is beautiful - there's no crew car but it's only about a 1mi walk to downtown. Quote
Marauder Posted August 1, 2015 Report Posted August 1, 2015 Genessee County Airport (GVG) is in the middle of no where. I go there often since my family is in the area. The airport is just north of town. You should be able to get a lift into town. Here are some restaurants: Alex's BBQ and Steakhouse (near the horse track) Bourbon & Burger Center Street Restaurant (open roof restaurant) Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
aviatoreb Posted August 1, 2015 Report Posted August 1, 2015 I tried uber last week for the first time twice. once in Oshkosh - then the next day in Anne arbor mi. in Ann Arbor I looked on the uber app after I shut off my engine but before I even got out. I could see there was a car "3mim away" so I called it. it arrive just as I finished tying down. perfect! a great way to do ground transportation - better than taxi - no futzing around trying to pick a company or wondering when they will come (you see them on GPS) or trying to explain where you are (they see you too on GPS). 2 Quote
Danb Posted August 1, 2015 Report Posted August 1, 2015 Erik I've never tried Uber, based on your synopsis it sound like a great idea. Quote
aviatoreb Posted August 1, 2015 Report Posted August 1, 2015 I had never tried either - and almost did for like 6 months several times - but then I jumped in - it's fantastic since you do get to see on GPS exactly where they are and as they get close there is no wondering how long it will take. I would still find the taxi company number as a backup plan silver there is not always going to be an available uber when you need it. I figured in a college town like Anne arbor there would be and there were a lot. I'm at my In laws 3 mi from Hartford Bradley field right now - I see 7 uber cars within 2 min right now - hovering - wIting to get s call. Quote
DrBill Posted August 2, 2015 Report Posted August 2, 2015 CAVU restaurant at Kobelt Airport (just NW of Newburg NY). on the field. Nu-Cavu Restaurant and Lounge, located on the airport. Offering indoor and outdoor dining. 845.895.9000  Bill Quote
Loogie Posted August 2, 2015 Author Report Posted August 2, 2015 Thanks for the gouge! We are flying to Batavia because my bride's grandpa is getting a memorial from the firefighters in Batavia. He died from smoke inhalation, no Scott packs yet, great guy from what I've heard. We will be flying back to KAKQ on Thursday so I thought we would find a nice cheery place for lunch. Erik, that's funny, north of SYR is really upstate! But thanks we need to head southish. We will save that for later when leaves are changing! Marauder, will try at least one of those options! CAVU might be an option, on RTB! 1 Quote

DrBill Posted August 2, 2015 Report Posted August 2, 2015 I learned to fly at Kobelt in the 70s. My mom and Dad would come over Fri or Sat nights for dinner at the CAVU (same place now new name). since I was lineboy at the airport from 10 -10 Weekends and 6-10 weekdays. I've heard from my friends in the Beech Aero Club that it is a great place to eat.  Bill Quote

Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk  You said it brotha. There are essentially three parts of NY State. "The City", and "Long Guyland" and city-folk think "upstate" starts at Westchester County. Meanwhile, upstate like we live in, looks and feels more like VT or NH - its Adirondacks region. Funny that "they" (city folk) call places like Binghampton as "upstate" even though it is on the Southern Border. Its a big state - from Potsdam its a 8.5 hr drive to the tip of Long Island, Montauk, NY, 6 hrs drive to NYC, and 5 hrs drive to Niagra Falls.  Say....you should check out Niagra Falls! Come to think of it, I should check out Niagra Falls - I have never been. 1 Quote
Hank Posted August 3, 2015 Report Posted August 3, 2015 There will probably be a MAPA PPP in Naiagra this fall. I took my wife to one there in Sept 2012; we found out why it's a popular honeymoon spot--nothing else to do after supper, you can only watch the lights on the falls from Canada for so long . . . 1 Quote

Bob_Belville Posted August 3, 2015 Report Posted August 3, 2015 Uber. I have not used it myself but I dropped my daughter and grandson off at EPPS @ KPDK Wednesday. She contacted Uber as I was shutting down and a Town Car was on the ramp before we got inside EPPS. (It was her 1st use of Uber so I think her only cost was a tip.) Quote

DrBill Posted August 6, 2015 Report Posted August 6, 2015 I was born in Poughkeepsie NY, it was considered upstate through when I left in 79. Now it's a bedroom community for NYC workers who have a 2 hr train ride or 1.5 hr drive to Manhattan. The guy who bought my house commutes to Brooklyn every day !! (YUK). Was a nice place to grow up and had some great trout fishing streams nearby. Bill Quote

aviatoreb Posted August 6, 2015 Report Posted August 6, 2015 You must not have ever been to west  Texas  I bet it is - I need to get there one of these days.  I have been allotta places in this country that each time I was there I thought to myself, this place is more beautiful than the last. I love where I live, but I love visiting lots of other places - but I tend to the outdoorsee places more than any/most of the cities. Bill  My commute is 2 mi - by bicycle in the summer. And its 1.5 mi to the airport.  But we are moving TOMORROW! To a new house across town, and the new house is beautiful and on the river with a gorgeous deck out on the water and a nice lawn rolling down to the water. My new commute will be 1.5 mi to work - by land - or now I could do the commute 0.5 mi by kayak - and don't think I won't try that since we do have several kayaks - and the university is on the opposite side of the river and they have a canoe house right there. Only downside is that when I get home late my wife doesn't believe me if I blame traffic. Loogie Posted August 6, 2015 Author Report Posted August 6, 2015 Erik, blame the portage...or the trout... Flew back this am from "western NY", falls were nice, and we also flew over Attica, great food was had by all, enjoyed the "cool wx" and got hit by some serious humidity on way back. Thanks for the suggestions, probably do roscoe NY next time after dropping wife in CT, need some fly fishing... Quote
DonMuncy Posted August 6, 2015 Report Posted August 6, 2015 Erik, That was a GREAT BIG smiley face on that. Out west you can go for hundreds of miles an see nothing but sand dunes and tumbleweeds. But there are a lot of parts of Texas that are quite nice. The piney woods of East Texas (home of DMax), the Big Bend mountains and the Hill Country around Kerrville. However, you might want to wait for a little cooler weather. Quote
