Only Mr Ford can tell of his choice to make the turn. He may have still been making partial power and knew he could keep the golf course as an option also there may have been some golfers on the fairway in front of him. Either way he did great as he will recover and no one else hurt. Also don't know how high he was at the time he may have needed the turn to get down before losing the fairway

Excellent point. He made the 180 and came up a little short and did not take a chance to go for the runway. I agree that he is the only one that can elsbrate on his choices.

I am not sure if I would have done differently since he was at about 3000 feet per some reports. I used to fly in and out of KSMO and all the pilots are well aware of the golf course as an emergency landing option.

The time I presented were minutes on the recording. It looks like it was one minute thirty seconds from takeoff clearance to his call back to the tower.
