My J has a KAP100 autopilot. This model does not have altitude hold, which I would like. I was wondering if anybody had converted a KAP100 install to a KAP/KFC 150 install? I would think all I need is the computer and a pitch servo. I already have electric trim and the roll servo with my current system. Comments? I've discussed this with my shop and they feel it should not be difficult.

I know I can get an STEC altitude hold only add-on, but I'd kind of like to keep things all in one box. It seems like a dismal state in autopilots these days, no real modern alternatives are available to us, and what is available is a fortune.

Anybody got a KAP150 system for sale?

Thanks, Larry

I have the KAP-100 and I had the STEC 60 PSS system added about a year ago.  I've been very happy with the results!

With GTN-750 & GPSS working in conjunction with my A/P system, hands off (except throttle & gear/flap handles) operations to LPV mins are now my reality...it's magical.

I have a KAP-100 w/separate altitude hold. The altitude hold went intermittent, dropping out on my last flight, then buttons would not light and wouldn't respond at all (test function lights all lights still). Checked servo wiring and plugs - appears okay. Would like to first check wiring connection behind unit, but can't see an easy way to get at it (other than removing engine and cutting hole in firewall :c). What has to come out to get to this? Is there an easy way I'm not seeing? It's picture center, on the little sub-panel. Any advice appreciated.

Larry, several years ago I changed a KAP200 to KFC200 with flight director.  The wires were already installed by the factory, but it required changing the Attitude indicator for a flight director, and some upgrades to the computer.  Also required a new annunciator panel.  I suspect it is doable, but you need some help with someone like autopilots central to look at the original installation and give you some guidance.

For altitude holds, there is a pitch servo, an interface to the trim servo, and I suspect the very expensive control yolk switch.  There are plenty of wires, which translates into plenty of installation $$.

Finally, you need to figure out if you have to purchase an STC, or whether it is already covered under 'factory options' ?
