FlyDave Posted March 14, 2014 Report Posted March 14, 2014 If you are interested in supporting the expansion of privileges for drivers license medical, the EAA has setup an easy way to petition:http://govt.eaa.org/14781/support-general-aviation-pilot-protection-act/?m=4504684 Quote
carusoam Posted March 14, 2014 Report Posted March 14, 2014 See also the thread.... http://mooneyspace.com/topic/11597-politically-active-in-nj-support-your-ability-to-fly/?hl=active I believe they are the same bills in congress. So read and distribute, if you can... Best regards, -a- Quote
Jeff_S Posted March 14, 2014 Report Posted March 14, 2014 I think it was Robert Goyer (he's the Editor in Chief of Flying Magazine, right?) who said that he thinks this bill doesn't go far enough. Why limit it to VFR only pilots? What is inherently different about IFR flying that would make it more necessary for them to need a full medical? I support the general notion of getting rid of the Class 3 Medical entirely, but I supposed this is a good first step. Quote

I don't think it is unreasonable to be required to have a class 3 medical if you are flying in the system, we do need some check and balance. besides if you have a medical emergency flying VFR it is easier to find a safe landing spot, not so easy if you are IFR especially for a pinch hitter in the right seat. Just my opinion Brian Quote
carusoam Posted March 14, 2014 Report Posted March 14, 2014 Brian, The question is... Do you need to pay extra to have the federal government to tell you to stay home? The class 3 is a simple test that turns people away unnecessarily. The class three won't help your loved one's in IFR, will it? Really??? It is quite possible to have a fatal heart attack while on a class 3 medical. We are trying to modernize an ancient system that ignores modern science. Be aware, clearing the class 3 hurdle does not indicate you are healthy. It is not a real test of your medical condition. Join us in support of your ability to fly. You may want to learn about it more, -a- Quote

It is easier to negotiate down than up. Non comerical IFR and VFR up to FL18 should be included in this bill. Quote
Rhumbline Posted March 14, 2014 Report Posted March 14, 2014 Non comerical IFR and VFR up to FL18 should be included in this bill. I'll let others debate the IFR restriction but I agree that FL180 is reasonable and if a maximum altitude substantially below that is to exist, it should be 14,000' MSL or 2,500' AGL, whichever is GREATER. Surely I'm not the only one flying in a mountainous region! Quote

I do agree that it should be put on the table, and to respond to Carusoam no a third class medical won't keep you from having issues when flying but it will get them to see their doctor every couple of years. I'm sure that is not an issue for some people but to be honest I only go to the doctor for my flight physical or if my wife drags me there. as for being turned away I would hope that a clause is included stating that failure of a class I,II,or III medical does not disqualify you from Flying with your drivers license Brian Quote
