I just saw articles that Garmin is introducing their own AOA system for both the experimental and certified markets. The first release will be for the experimental market using the G3X box for display. The certified version is said to be available in the third quarter of this year. What is interesting to me is that the AOA probe seems to be integrated into the airspeed probe, and if so, that would sure simplify the installation. It will come in heated and unheated versions, with an expected price of about $1500 according to the articles I read. The indicator (GI260?) looks much like the Bendix unit that apparently is designed to sit on the glareshield -looks a bit boxy compared to the Bendix unit, but impossible to guess the size. The Bendix unit is small, but uses what appears to be an OEM version of the Alpha probe, What would seal the deal for me would be having the AOA actually display on the GTN 750 (or GTN 650) or even the AERA 796. By the way, does anyone know anything about a AERA 796 replacement, or major upgrade?

I would expect the display has two good spots....

Up in the windshield area that is in plain sight while you are focused down the runway.

Near the ASI for cross checking.

Having it in the center stack seems further from ideal.

I think the center tube might be the place for a line of lights.

Heated probe is the way to go.

I spoke with Bendix King; it's the Alpha probe with their (BK) indicator (also largely Alpha's documentation). The Alpha folks think the indicator should be on the glareshield (ideally on the left side) so it's in your peripheral vision. The person I spoke with had been a Navy guy; he said to look outside and fly the AOA. They didn't think below the glareshield was ideal.

Left side of the glare shield would be perfect, shove it all the way in the corner. It's a natural place to look while making left turns in the pattern. But why is the display unit so large and clunky?

Has anyone seen the Garmin AOA in action? I am trying to decide on which system to install at annual and I like the looks of the Garmin display and the pitot tube input.

Need PIREPs

thanks
