TTaylor Posted January 14, 2014 Report Posted January 14, 2014 Unfortunately I can not find either SEM Plastic or Krylon Fusion locally. Hard to select paint colors from on-line paint chips. Any recommendation for colors that you have used? Quote
Dcflyn Posted January 14, 2014 Report Posted January 14, 2014 Of course it depends on your color scheme, but SEM Super White is slightly off-white and goes with everything. Makes the cockpit look light, friendly and smart. Fresh paint here in my previous C172N, I hope this gives you a better idea: https://www.dropbox.com/s/le5oi8skijtstsq/back-window-sm.jpg Quote
kmyfm20s Posted January 14, 2014 Report Posted January 14, 2014 Light Almond was the best match for the original panels in my J. Quote

Bob_Belville Posted January 15, 2014 Report Posted January 15, 2014 I would be surprised if you could not find the SEM paint at an Auto Supply place like NAPA Quote

TTaylor Posted January 15, 2014 Author Report Posted January 15, 2014 Thanks all, this group is great. I found the local auto paint store has SEM in stock. I was looking at the colors and thought Super White looked about right. Pulled my phone out and checked Mooney Space and had the confirmation from this thread. Bob_Belville Posted January 15, 2014 Report Posted January 15, 2014 I used 3 SEM colors plus clear cote. Quote
kmyfm20s Posted January 15, 2014 Report Posted January 15, 2014 KMYF M20J, What brand of paint? I used Krylon fusion. It work great but takes several days to completely cure. It will have somewhat of a gummy feel for a short time after but goes away. Quote
Dcflyn Posted January 16, 2014 Report Posted January 16, 2014 Bob, did you remove the circular rotating air vents overhead to paint? If so, how did they detach? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Quote
Bob_Belville Posted January 16, 2014 Report Posted January 16, 2014 Bob, did you remove the circular rotating air vents overhead to paint? If so, how did they detach? Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Yes, I took them off for painting. I did not take a pic of the back side but on a '66E you have to at least partially disassemble the air duct to get to the nut on the inside. (Above the knob) my duct had quite a few small screws covered by duct tape which you can replace as you reassemble. It's a little tedious but nothing like replace the boots around the rudder pedals! Dcflyn Posted January 16, 2014 Report Posted January 16, 2014 Ah, yes, I remember now--that ducting needs to be stripped of tape. I've taken off enough during my refurb and unscrewed way too many screws. I choose to mask and spray in place. I'll let you know how covering everything else in the cockpit turns out. :-/ Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk 1 Quote

I had interior AND side windows out for re-furb so re-painting the ceiling vents in place was a non-event. Painting the floor plastic/Between seats/carpet runners and nose-wheel cover were worst. Small increments...How long can you hold your breath? No respirator, NOT a good idea. Quote
Dcflyn Posted January 17, 2014 Report Posted January 17, 2014 Thankfully I was able to remove the plastic between the seats and the nose wheel cover. In fact, I've removed damn near everything in the cabin except those ceiling vents. I'm not looking forward to putting it all back together. Yes, a respirator will be used while painting. David Quote
Wakeup Posted January 17, 2014 Report Posted January 17, 2014 Any thoughts or recommendations on replacing screws that have fallen out? Sounds easy, but some or should I say Most are all different sizes. Over the years.... My old plane has been screwed several times over the years and my holes are now...lack of a better term.. loose. I would love to take the panels off and repaint them, but my big concern is all those different size screws messing with my head every time I look at them. 1 Quote
