  1. Sounds like if you are going with Garmin, the GTX345 or 345R (remote) is the one to go with. Looks like a great box. http://www.beechtalk.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=119062
  2. Or buy an Avidyne IFD (550, 540, 440, etc, etc) They have a USB plug on the front that charges devices.
  3. His engine is toast after sucking in all that water.
  4. I keep the TIT at 1600 and the CHT's range from 365-380. I wonder if Mooney and Lycoming had just recommended more reasonable, conservative power settings if the bravo conversion would have been necessary also. Some Bravo conversion owners who flew them hard still did cylinder replacements pretty early.
  5. David, Calls to Jimmy on the Ovation have picked up since I lowered the price. The TLS flies incredibly well. I took it to Lubbock and back a couple weeks ago and it was a pleasure to fly. With the new interior it looks and smells like a new plane. I keep thinking about doing the Bravo conversion at some point, but the temps are exactly where they should be, the compressions are all in the 70's, so no rush. Lance
  6. Careful what you ask for You could trade yours in when you come down to TX to visit the factory. When you get home just tell anyone who asks that you had your airplane painted.
  7. In the past few months I pulled the interior out of a TLS and had Aero Comfort cover the Royalite plastic panels in ultraleather. (At the same time all the carpet and the seats came out as well.) I then reinstalled all the panels using the same hardware I removed. The heads of the screws were pre-painted to match the new color of the ultraleather. Every place there was a hole on the plastic panel, I used an awl to make a small hole through the ultraleather and then had to make sure it went into the hole sheet metal. A small electric screwdriver from Harbor Freight was very useful. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. The covering on each panel just adds a couple ounces of weight, but it adds a lot of strength and durability. The panels were yellowed and were very fragile to take out of the airplane. They were much more durable to re-install. The panels in this airplane were in good shape to begin with, but even if they had been cracked and pretty beat up, Aero Comfort would have repaired them. Once they are covered they are like new. I'm glad I did it for the experience of getting to know the airplane, but I came away realizing that the guys who do this for a living earn every cent they charge.
  8. You must have Skywatch on your Ovation. That's active traffic that interrogates transponders near you.
  9. would be great to see a picture
  10. That's amazing since Apple just had their best quarter ever in their 40 year history http://9to5mac.com/2016/01/26/apple-earnings-fy16-q1/ It was also the most profitable quarter for any publicly traded company ever. http://appadvice.com/appnn/2016/01/apple-records-its-biggest-and-most-profitable-quarter-ever Comparing Apple to King who can't bring a product to market to save their life is not accurate at all.
  11. Plus on long flights you can tune in Leave it to Beaver . . just kidding. That was a rare option on a Mooney back then.
  12. Pinch and zoom is nice, awesome screen resolution compared to the 430W. But the great stuff is just starting to come out - the IFD100 app will be a game changer.
  13. Wow - thanks for the instructions and video. I really appreciate it!
  14. Fredericksburg (T82), not Frederick (that's in Maryland). The on field hotel and diner are worth a trip over there. Also not far away in Llano (KAQO) is Cooper's BBQ. They leave a van at the airport for fly-in visitors. http://www.flyingmag.com/pilots-places/pilots-adventures-more/gear-taking-hill-country-spin The Cowboy Steakhouse in Kerrville is a great choice also. http://www.cowboysteakhouse.com/ It belongs to the family of David Ferrus, a Mooneyspacer (McStealth).
  15. I've used this one with no problems on a 28v system to charge an iPad http://www.sportys.com/pilotshop/dual-2-1-usb-cigarette-lighter-charger.html
  16. Wow! After living as many years as you've lived you sure do seem majorly confused on what builds good relationships between other human beings. Yes, you are correct the compass related items are strictly what make up the KCS-55A system, however there has never been one installed to my knowledge without a King KI256 or 258, so I lumped it all together. You are right, I am wrong, oh mighty one - I know that's what you were looking for and now you have it. Building people up and allowing them their dignity endears them to you and makes you feel good at the same time, a win-win. Your constant nitpicking of others is what distances you from others on the forum. I can only imagine what a joy you are for those close to you.
  17. The KCS55A System was the state of the art system for 30 years. I flew behind one in a Mooney 231, 2 Mooney Bravos and one Piper Mirage. I still have one in a Mooney TLS. I lost the AI two different times - once in VFR, once in IFR (very slow loss of attitude - thankfully I caught it and covered up the AI and hand flew it). I've lost a couple vacuum pumps in VFR also, but had standby pumps. After reading accident reports about people losing the only AI onboard, I think the only sensible way to stay with the KCS55A system today is to make sure you have a some type of standby attitude. There are a lot of options - replace the electric turn coordinator with an electric AI with slip/skid. Replace the TC with a Sandia Quattro or L-3 Genesis. Even Foreflight or Garmin Pilot with AHRS. But to fly IFR with no attitude backup in the year 2016 seems foolish when there are so many options. When you read about some accidents you come away thinking that they were put in circumstances that were just beyond their control. In this situation for $1000 - $5000 you at least give yourself a good chance of getting it on the ground safely.
  18. TKS wasn't offered on Mooneys until around 1996. Very few 231s, which were discontinued in 1985, were retrofitted with TKS de-ice. To have TKS FIKI, you need dual alternators - not available on a 231.
  19. If you are going to buy it and fly it it could be a great deal. Get a Don Maxwell pre-buy and if it checks out, you are into it for probably close to $50,000 less than retail when you consider the overhauled engine and the air conditioning. It also has the best autopilot in any non-glass Mooney, the Bendix King KFC225.
  20. I think you're remembering N444HK. I looked at that one also. (The H in N444HK was H. L. Wilson the one who had Alzheimers. The K was Beau King the one selling it.) https://www.controller.com/images/Controller/externalfiles/15468.pdf
  21. I hope the next thing Dynon gets the STC on is the Dynon Skyview. This will open up competition with the Aspen, G500/600, etc. Garmin would be prodded into getting the G3X into the certified marketplace. http://dynonavionics.com/docs/SkyView_intro.html
  22. The thing that bothers me the most is that the airplane was too much to handle for the person flying it without additional training and it appears that he never got it. People will spend a quarter to a half a million dollars on an airplane and then won't spend another 1-2% of that to get some transition training.
  23. They don't make one for the M20M.
