  1. Great Video!! I need to get a Go Pro
  2. Brian Kendrick noticed it during maintenance.
  3. A crack was noticed on my exhaust pipe Number 7 on the diagram The crack didn't look so bad on the tailpipe when it was on the engine. But it turns out after it was taken off that it was only being held together by about 30% of the weld. Here's my shiny new tailpipe I don't like to think about what would have happened if that had separated in flight.

  6. There are separate forward facing halogen recognition lights on the wingtips that melt the lens. The nav lights face the side. This conversation has been going on a long time. http://mooneyspace.com/topic/455-led-recognition-lights-are-you-interested/#comment-4429
  7. Lighting on aircraft is not for decoration - it's for safety - "see and be seen". I want the brightest lights I can have for landing in the dark and I want other airplanes to see me day and night. With LED landing and taxi lights I leave them on all the time for recognition lights. The stock recognition lights that Mooney engineers had available to them in 2000 when my Mooney was built will melt the lens on the wingtip if you forget and leave them on - I never turn them on any more since I have four much better recognition lights - two LED taxi and two LED landing lights. I never would have done that with incandescent or I would have been changing bulbs monthly. They got very hot and used a lot of amps. In the case of lighting only listen to those people who have upgraded and get their opinions - anything else is rhetoric and theory.
  8. I have Alphabeam Taxi and Landing lights - fantastic lights!
  9. Spoken in true ignorance . . . Edison's first incandescents lasted seconds, then minutes, finally hours. LED's last thousands of hours or decades - as long as the airplane or longer. I think that's called progress. One less thing to worry about once they're changed. Added benefits are more light and less current draw. I've changed landing lights in the wing too many times. One day people will laugh about how primitive and fragile the incandescent light bulb was. Oh yeah, that day is now.
  10. Where would you find room for the L-3 on that panel?
  11. Believe it or not . . the aviation department at Home Depot has actually lowered the price to $3.98. (Same part # 06635, different packaging now) http://www.homedepot.com/p/MD-Building-Products-3-8-in-x-10-ft-Black-Sponge-Rubber-Foam-Weatherstrip-Tape-06635/100353487?MERCH=REC-_-PIPHorizontal1_rr-_-100355591-_-100353487-_-N
  12. Mooney has been making promises for a long time for a solution. No one is asking them to pay for it. These planes won't be grounded, but in less than 4 years without ADS-B they will be very limited. I'm sure Garmin will provide a GDL-88 solution to Mooney and others for ADS-B compliance. On Garmin's site under GDL-88 it says: Expand Your Options with Industry Support The GDL 88 also supports some ADS-B “in” features on a wide range of other cockpit displays. That means you’ll see TIS-A traffic on G1000 integrated flight decks and some third-party navigators that support the published legacy GDL 90 protocol, as well as FIS-B NEXRAD radar and METAR weather.
  13. Mooney wanted to be the first with the G1000 and didn't wait for the GFC700 Autopilot. Instead they went with the S-Turn, I mean S-Tec. http://www.aopa.org/News-and-Video/All-News/2005/February/1/Mooney-Gets-Glass

  15. I bought one of these (a 36" long, 1/2" high aluminum ez access transition), cut it in thirds. When I am ready to put the airplane back in the hangar i place these in front of the lip and it makes it much easier with the robotow or anything else. You can also fins them in 1" as well. http://hagersupply.com/?page=products&action=view&manufacturerID=61&productID=442S&linkID=7751&sku=442S-42-GLD&gclid=Cj0KEQiAno60BRDt89rAh7qt-4wBEiQASes2tV0OSNYL612a88AZ6cYKlmoGWVbJEPABffWdMfOvXwcaAjvO8P8HAQ
  16. 1. Yes. The trays are interchangeable. If you have a Garmin 430W with a Garmin WAAS antenna your Avidyne will be WAAS. If not then you will need to use a WAAS antenna and cabling. 2. Probably not legally. I bought a subscription for each box and got a bundled deal last year at the Jepp booth at Oshkosh where if I paid for 12 months they gave me 15 months.
  17. Haha if I did that I'd have to buy back the 530W from you. It may come down to pulling the Avidynes out and replacing them with used Garmins if the person who buys it wants to have the price lowered. Or you could trade in your J on the R with the Avidynes in it. : )
  18. Actual mileage may vary. Please see dealer for details. Void where prohibited. Just kidding. Some dealers have specials going where certain items are discounted or thrown in. There are rebates at times. You can look at Ebay completed auctions to get a feel for what used 530W's and 430W's are actually bringing - I didn't trade mine in.
  19. It's been a year so far since I replaced the GNS530W with a slide-in Avidyne IFD540. At the same time I replaced a King KT76C digital display Transponder with an Avidyne AXP340 with ADS-B out. I thought I would briefly mention my thoughts. The Garmin 530 was a workhorse and when it came out in 1998 - it leapfrogged over anything available. To have a nav/com/gps/decent sized moving map in one box this size was a game changer. But many years have passed and as good as it was, technology has allowed things on avionics now that weren't available back then: - MUCH higher resolution screen. The 530 displayed 8 colors, the Avidyne IFD540 displays 65,000 with 4 times as many pixels. The screen size is even 20% bigger. - The touch screen/pinch and zoom is great since we are all used to iPhones, iPads and other devices that use this technology. Buttons are there if you want to do that as well. - It may sound like a small feature but something I use on every flight is the USB port to keep my iPad charged. - Rubberbanding is there and I need to remember to use it more often. It used to be that there was a market for a Multi-Function display and a gps but with the IFD540 and other newer technology GPS's no need. I liked the 540 so much that later in the year I replaced the GNS430W with a slide-in Avidyne IFD440. I didn't have room to go to a second IFD540 or I would have. Believe me I tried. The units are very easy to get used to. The FMS requires a little change in your thinking and planning, but while you are figuring it out, "Direct-To" works just fine. The slide-in installations were a piece of cake. I wrote down all of my settings and took pictures of those screens on the Garmins and with the help of an A&P slid the old one out and then the new one in. After a few minutes of entering the configurations, everything I had on the Garmins were on the Avidynes (Stormscope WX-500, Skywatch traffic, etc). The Aspens saw the Avidynes with no problems. It couldn't have been easier. In addition to the new technology these are zero time boxes with new warranties. Eventually everything wears out. I figured I had definitely had my money's worth from the Garmins. A nice part of the upgrade is that much of it is paid for by selling the Garmins after you pull them out. These are new products so there are regular software updates to them as we speak. Avidyne listens on their forum and wants feedback (http://www.avidynelive.com/default.asp). The updates that have come out I am able to load myself under the supervision of an A & P if I choose since there is no avionics shop on the field where I am based. Try that with any other brand - I don't think so. The database updates from Jepp are as easy as it gets. Load them on a properly formatted USB stick and then put them in and load them by the directions. It has worked every time for me with no glitches. The last software update activated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on the units so I am excited to see what's in store this year from 3rd party apps. Avidyne already has a bluetooth keyboard and is sending everyone a keyboard free that registers by the end of the year. Quick comment on ADS-B out. This is well worth it. Don't wait until you have to do it, get the benefits of it now. I get my ADS-B-in and 3-D vision on a GARMIN 796 and an iPad or iPhone with a GDL-39 3D. I originally thought that an Avidyne IFD540 was only a worthwhile choice if you have a GNS to slide out. But I like them so much that I am installing an IFD 540 / AXP340 as a new install in another airplane (M20M). I could have chosen anything since it was a new install, but I felt this was the best value. For those that already have a Garmin 530 or 430 in my opinion this is the best upgrade for the dollar value out there. (Hang on, three IFD's in one year might make me their best customer yet . .lol)
  20. I haven't tried the Sidewinder but have heard great things. I have a Robotow and am very satisfied. Whatever you do, don't even think about a Minimax: http://mooneyspace.com/topic/14330-wtb-tug/#comment-192949 http://mooneyspace.com/topic/4734-minimax-tug/?page=1
  21. That's a pretty close description. The 310 hp Ovation feels like it climbs a little better initially but after 7000 or 8000 the TLS (or Bravo) beats it.
  22. Who changes underwear? j/k Turning the TLS I bought into a project - only need one Mooney.
  23. I listed my Ovation with Jimmy Garrison at All American. Call him or me if you have any questions. http://www.controller.com/listings/aircraft/for-sale/1405197/2000-mooney-m20r-ovation3?OHID=1405197 210-643-4161 lancecasper@me,com
  24. Precisely why I would replace one at a time. Perfect example: the failure rate on brand new slick mags out of the box is off the charts. Taking two mags that are working and replacing them with two new slick mags would not be good odds.
