  1. Aspen has a know path forward for IFR and auto pilot interface. G5 you are hoping it will come in the future. That said Aspen could and should offer the full Pro 1000 version for the 4AMU price IMHO. At that price I think they would increase volume tremendously and claim a greater market share. The only difference is software and yes software does cost $ to develop. People who were struggling with the decision to install a single Aspen Pro would probably do it faster and probably install 2.
  2. They can be constant speed but you jut have to be quick and willing to climb out on the nose with the engine running. didn't say it was practical or safe.
  3. Aerodynamics are aerodynamics you might get some odd one off neat looking models but in the end look at nature all the fastest birds look very similar. They are not copying form each other so much as it is what works. Also in nature birds retract their landing gear while in flight. The composite materials allows for reduced drag and smother shapes over aluminum or other materials. Every seam, every gap, every joint, causes turbulence and turbulence causes drag. Look at the evolution of NASCAR from the 50s to the 90s and you will see how they started closing gaps with fairings to increase speed and efficiency. Al did that very well in the beginning and it was greatly improved on over the years to today's Ovation models. But I do think a retract, turbo charged, 200 to 225hp diesel, 4 seat composite Mooney just might have some appeal especially if you can put 4 FAA adults in it. Further, with a new air frame and wing you could play more with the seat locations and give passengers some more room longitudinally and laterally. Maybe the next step with the long body Mooney is using a composite frame, lengthen the chord of the wing to increase useful load and control stall speed IDK I'm just rambling.
  4. My wife would probably complain more than anyone else.
  5. I'm not aware of any speed limitation on leaving the step down. It will cost you about 5 knots of overall speed.
  6. Bob I'm so sorry to hear this. Thoughts and prayers for you and your family.
  7. Absolutely nothing wrong with getting you PPL in a tail dragger in fact it is a good thing but as others have said go directly to the PPL and skip the light sport. Make sure you have the $7k sitting in the bank ready for your flying lessons. $125/hr plane (40 hours) $50 per hour CFI (20 hours) this is $6k and you will probably need more than the minimum 40 hours and that is typical I had 45 or 48 hours when I earned my PPL. Set a reasonable time goal to get you PPL 6 months is very reasonable. I did mine in 5 months while working part time and going full time to college. If you go over a month or two no big problem but you set a goal to achieve. Clear your schedule of soccer games for the kids, boy scouts, weddings, XYZ organizations whatever and make going flying a routine and a can't miss item on you schedule. Start the book work now before you ever start flying. The flying is the fun part the book work is the PIA part. The FAA has plenty of manuals free of charge you just down load them for the FAA site. https://www.faa.gov/regulations_policies/handbooks_manuals/aviation/airplane_handbook/ Lots of good information here to look through https://www.faa.gov/regulations_policies/handbooks_manuals/aviation/ Learn where to find the answers. FAA web site, FARs, CFIs other pilots etc. Ask questions here and ask other pilots you meet not every answer will be right. There is a wonderful search feature the questions most likely has been asked before. Once you have you PPL rent some planes and fly them. Fly with others in different planes. Figure out what you want to use your newly acquired skill and knowledge for and then get the airplane that fits that mission. Good luck and keep up posted on your progress.
  8. Reducing transmitter power output would not increase range but I'm just an electrical engineer and when asked one day how FM radio works I simply said freaking magic. Class B ATIS I can generally pickup 60 to 80 miles out at most altitudes above 5000. Smaller ATIS and AWOS stations generally 20 to 30 miles you can pick them up at 2000 AGL. You should be able to pick up a WX broadcast at least 25 miles out so you can set up for the approach even in VMC. JMHO
  9. Yes weather looks good for the last weekend
  10. I'd like a twin but the only advantage I see would be long water crossings. I know people do them in singles but I have not yet worked up the never to go straight from New Orleans to Orlando, Cozumel or Key West.

  12. skipped organic chemistry, biology and went straight to electrical engineering but ultimately took the scenic route through college I was having too much fun AFROTC and getting my pilot license. In the end not pilot slot in the USAF . Chemistry 1 and 2 were enough though we did make aspirin in one of the labs but it still didn't get rid of the headaches.
  13. was something jammed between the bar and the wheel well with the gear in the down position? You might want to get it up on the jacks and double check it and make sure everything is well greased.
  14. I see now all your girls are photo shopped. That explains it you are hiding their true beauty so we don't try to steal them form you.
  15. We have been saying this for a while here. All you need to do is turn on fuel prices on your favorite site that show the airports and then look at who has the high prices and most of the time it is Signature.
  16. I've always like the velocity and would mind having one one day. The center console control stick may take some getting used to. We have 2 velocities at my home field.
  17. just keep some extra bottles of water and rinse after use. Where is that light precipitation when you need it.
  18. They seem to break off real easy too.
  19. I started in fixed wing and move to helios and I get form other rotor heads why you fly so high.
  20. The airplane id free you just need to pay for the full tanks of fuel and the hat.
  21. Heck it's only money finance it and then it would be yours in 30 years or so 10 years sooner than waiting for it to depreciate and you get to enjoy it in the mean time.
  22. Can I buy a 2nd door for my F?
  23. I repainted my prop myself and had similar results with the prop paint from Aircraft Spruce. I stripped the prop, aloidine, zinc chromate and then the prop paint. I may have rushed the process and I will try again at annual when I have more time.
  24. I like it always thought about doing something like this.
