  1. We have the honor (notice I spelled honor correctly ) system at my home airport as well with a padlock to keep the really dishonest folks away. It is a private airport so we rarely have outsiders flying in unless invited and no cameras and only members have a key.
  2. I just time it so that I'm right behind the guy in the Cessna and tell him to leave the pump on for me and then fill up on his nickle. Works like a charm they are usually so happy a Mooney pilot is talking to them they don't even know what happened.
  3. is the dog house support good for lifting the engine? I'm sure it would work but the lifting eyes are usually thicker metal. Just wondering
  4. Wings program is successful in the respect that there is a record of you taking some type of course. IMHO that is all it is good for the way it is currently structured. I got frustrated with the program after attending a number of seminars, doing online courses, flying with an instructor and still never completed any single level all in the time span of a single year. After that experience I resolved myself to not worry about completing any level of Wings and just take the courses and seminars as they come about and get what ever credit I get for doing them. Another side note about he AOPA courses many of the are excellent however sometimes they do seem to be overly long. IMHO they need to be structured to be no more then 20 minutes of total online time to compel a course 15 minutes would be optimal. A single topic may even have 2, 3 or more parts to fully complete. Using this a person has the option of doing do one or more classes during their lunch hour. They need to set up several categories for FR online classes and review that can be done by the pilot before going to the flight instructor. Get with your local CFI along with the printed certificate that you complete the online portion of the FR a short 10 minute Q&A session then off to fly. Categories would be the same as the ratings you have on your pilot cert. SEL, MEL, IR, commercial, Rotor craft etc. So a private pilot that only flies VFR would get a different online course than an instrument rated commercial pilot flying multi engine craft. Have these sessions broken won into four or five 15 minute online courses that you complete within 3 months of your FR. Conventional FRs would could still be done as well.
  5. same for inside the cowling.
  6. I have missed screws myself doing owner assisted annuals. It happens. If you have been getting good service from them in the past and they have resolved the issues without excuses or blame game I would not throw them out just yet but I would keep a closer watch over them.
  7. Probably went back and told her she missed something and has check again.
  8. looks like a genuine lovable mutt
  9. I agree with Andy drop the price another $5k from you already agreed to price get it here and put the new prop on it. That is assuming that everything else is worth it. If not consider moving on to another plane.
  10. other than liking the radial engine I'm sure glad Al cleaned up the design by the time he got to the M20s Interesting post.
  11. my experience has been mostly self motivated for the book work asking questions when needed. The instructors mainly taught how to fly the plane. My first instructor (actually my 3rd cousin) moved off after 2nd or 3rd lesson then he hooked me up with a good instructor before he left. He really kept on me about precision especially since at the time I wanted to be a USAF pilot. It has served me well over the years because I was never afraid to go into an airport maybe use more caution though. Stay on the student to hold the center-line on takeoffs and landings and be precise on the speeds. Don't let them settle for it will pass the check ride.
  12. thanks one of several designs posted
  13. Well here are the Tetons this morning and Jackson Hole WY. My first real flight with the peaks above me and relatively close.
  14. When the rotors were spinning it made my head spin. Just weird looking. All your power is used for lift and not wasted on the anti torque force provided by the tail rotor. Helicopters are complex machines with many moving parts I'm not sure if this configuration helps or hurts.
  15. I say it is in the injector. Pull it and clean it.
  16. I'm not sure what you are planning but when I had my E I upgraded to the 70A plane power and left the original 50A alternator breaker. I had late 80s early 90s vintage avionics and it worked fine never had any problems. Newer avionics generally draw less current then their predecessors.
  17. congrats. at least doing many ratings together the written and oral exams should become easier since much of the information is the same.
  18. I've done them without crates but I do secure the dog by his collar with leash or rope so that he can move but not exit the rear seat. Put a couple of old towels on the seat that has worked for me so far.
  19. congrats. I'm sure he will have to be with an instructor fro 5 to 10 hours before solo in the plane. Have him use that time towards his IR after the first 2 hours of learning the "complex" part of the flying the E. 10 hours of dual hood time will be good for him and a great start to his IR.
  20. Sorry to hear about that. I would pull the cylinder for a better look pull some accessories and bore-scope the heck out of the engine and then make a decision on what to do.
  21. go for it and let us know how it works out. the FARs say you can refinish the plane except balanced control surfaces. You are legal in my humble opinion.
  22. I was told even accessories like alternator vacuum pump go in air frame.
  23. I agree. I fly several different aircraft and use the check list. Like you the times I did not I usually missed something. Trim for takeoff is a good one I've missed before for the same reasons. It is easy to get distracted.
