What about the Mooney in the background??

Need something to read, safety related..?
1964-M20E replied to carusoam's topic in Mooney Safety & Accident Discussion
Yes too bad we are not going to get SnF this year. My buddy and I were all set to go. We would have been flying home today. Well I did get a good weekend working on the hangar. Building out an "office" an it is progressing faster than I anticipated with all this staying at home. -

Arghh I've been spotted I need to change my identity again. I want to know where my royalty check is they using my likeness. At least I was promoting the brand. -
First and foremost if you are really interested in this plane get a good pre-buy inspection (PPI) make sure the air frame is good and has no plane killing corrosion. I personally like the 64 models I had an E model years ago. Having not seen the plane but just to start I would think it should be more in the $25k range. Once you have a god air frame you can make it into whatever type of plane you want it to be. Base your offer on and deduct some or most of the costs to handle these: Overhaul the engine in a couple of years. Have the cash reserves to take care of a filed overhaul with new cam and lifters now if the need arises. Adding ADSB out New cylinders minus some for 350 hours left Any airworthy issues found during the PPI

This would not be bad if the price point was reasonable. However, if they want $60 to $80k for a new one throw asway after 2000 hours or worse a calendar time is a non starter and a foolish business adventure for them. JMHO

A number of long flights have been canceled for me. So it's just flying around the city. Mae one lat trip to the beach to eat just before all the shutdowns. Don't call me a conspiracy theorist but I think most of this is blown out of proportion. Yes there are some concerns associated with this and actions to be taken. I think it is a grand experiment to see just how far they can push the people of the world and the country in locking down their freedoms before the people push back.

LASAR Electronic Ignition thoughts
1964-M20E replied to MarkC's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
If they were.r available for our planes I'd put the E-mag on in a heart beat. Short of that I have been looking at the sure-fly. -

time to go fly to Lu Lu's and KHKA

Have you notices the proliferation of UAS prohibited flight area? Primarily they are around military bases and only up to 400AGL but there are quite a few of them now. A few months ago you didn't se them very often or at all. I landed at Fort Stewart, KLHW, a couple of weeks ago and I got to see one land not long after I did. So the prohibited space is not keeping you out if you are going there and talking to them.

Push pull flap release cable inner wire needed
1964-M20E replied to Nukemzzz's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
Also you can order another push pull cable with the same size inner wire and use the just the inner wire. Check you local small aviation engine shop or your local aviation hardware store. Get own long enough the trim and shape to fit. -
I like this too but the turbine cost is outrageous. However, since we are dreaming we can have the turbine, gearbox and prop for oh let's dream big $60k.

Any legal reason a USB charger has to be certified?
1964-M20E replied to ragedracer1977's topic in General Mooney Talk
If your IA will sign off on it install as a minor mod install it. This a minor mod only. After installation make sure you don't have any interference with radios and move on. If you experience interference try another brand or add a noise filter to the power lead to the USB port. JMHO -
Eliminate the pivoting tail to distinguish the AEB Money JEX from the original Mooney. Keep the 2 doors, roll cage and make a composite fuselage. Like others have said let Mooney built the wing, cage and landing gear and have the wing married to the cage. Bring it home and add landing gear, make control surfaces mat up the 2 half's of the composite fuselage etc. Factory assistance can be had for a fee for those who want to complete faster. Select any engine from 200HP up to 310HP owners choice. Avionics owners choice G1000 or steam. etc. Well we are dreaming.

Annual turned into engine overhaul. Jewell Aviation
1964-M20E replied to MATTS875's topic in Modern Mooney Discussion
sorry to hear about this. Is jewell doing the overhaul? -
I like the idea. Get away form the full glass as integrated with engine monitoring and other gauges. Us e JPI or something like that for guages Avydyne IFD 550 for the NAV/COM And best yet make the mid body as an experimental kit plane maybe have a full composite fuselage for cleaner airflow and faster speeds 310HP IO540

KLAL and camp out with your plane. That's what I have done for the last few years. Bring water, drinks and snacks they have enough food at the event.

Focus should be on the big wx picture
1964-M20E replied to Scott Dennstaedt, PhD's topic in Miscellaneous Aviation Talk
I think what you might be seeing is a progression of how easy a task is. Most weather products when supplied in text format generally are very verbose and fail to keep one's attention. My planning process is as follows for what is worth: Local TV weather: easy big picture item provides good information projected over the next few days METARs: easy big picture item when you zoom out and look at the dot color on skyvector.com or other service. This tells me what is happening right now along my route of flight. Short flights 1 to 2 hours tells you almost everything you need to know. TAF: easy detail item gives you some view of the future. Especially important for landing conditions at your arrival. NEXRAD radar. Big picture lets you see where the weather is coming from, where it is going and how intense it is AIRMET, SIGMET big picture items higher level of difficulty sometimes these seem to be crying wolf Prognostication charts, weather charts etc. are very high difficulty, unless you live and breath them and understand them well they are not of much value. Once my go no-go decision has been made either the day of the flight or earlier in cockpit ADSB weather services provide updated information to adapt to changing situations -
What do you fly if not your Mooney?

We are arguing over currency. I don't always argue about currency but when I do argue about currency I like to argue with a beer in beer in my hand. Be proficient my friend.

Word changes to make it easier to understand According to the article and upon careful reading of the FAR I do not think it changes the requirement. "...a person who has failed to meet the instrument experience (6, 6 & 6 in last 6 months) requirements of paragraph (c) of this section for more than six calendar months..." So if in January I do 6, 6 & 6 I have until June that I am current. My 6 month period of being current. I have 6 next months July to December to regain my currency by going out and flying the 6, 6 & 6 with an appropriate safety pilot, CFI or CFII or IPC if I so choose. Now if you are doing a minimum of 1,1&1 then I would think you still have 6 months from the last 1,1 & 1 to get current again without an IPC.

It looks like it s doable for our aircraft but I'm not sure how much is gained. There are some additional maintenance items that can be done by the pilot owner above our current preventive maintenance. It does say the owner pilot cannot change radios if wiring is involved. It really does not say anything about making changes such as electronic ignition or other major changes that do not already have an STC associated with them. A question for those who have an experimental aircraft. If you wanted to do what is classified as a major change for certificated aircraft do you have to file a form 337 with the FAA when you do it or just log book entry? I would think just log book entry.
