  1. I’m a ready and willing copilot with PLB, dry suit, and CC that will last for at least one fill up
  2. You have to budget for both, grease the wheels.
  3. The G5 is far more capable than the 525 and you’ll gain a lot of useful load in the process. A lot of bang for the buck and solves your GPSS problem.
  4. Warmer temperatures put some planes back into the air over SW MI. Nice to see some other GA pilots with open hangers showing some life at the local airports. Did three approaches and a couple holds on my way to the lakeshore. I always enjoy watching the ice pile into the shoreline and around the local lighthouse. Hopefully I’ll do a perimeter flight this summer and take pictures of all the lighthouses around the mitten.
  5. @chrixxer getting any closer to a new Mooney? I’m relieved you are looking at well maintained and upgraded F’s now for the number of hours you fly a year.
  6. Many people talk about a fuel card to receive substantial discounts on jetA even at larger airports. I wonder what the stipulations are and if that would be advantageous for you?
  7. Mine is probably in that 30-40 lb range when you add the extra hoses etc. I also have two external oil filters, one dedicated for the turbo and the other for the engine. With two heavy people in the front, nothing in the back, and full fuel I’m getting close to the forward cg. This gives me a lot of latitude in loading because my normal loads will fall into cg as I work towards gross. My plane would not be a good candidate for a heavy 3 blade or even a top prop. But it works great now and with the battery in the back stays in balance without adding weight.
  8. That’s not a tip toe, it will be a MASSIVE increase in safety and capability to have an HSI, GPSS, and new digital AP with the upset recovery.
  9. Ideally I’d like to get rid of my backup gauges because of the extra failure points, fuel lines past the firewall, and panel clutter. You could probably fine some cheap used oil pressure sensors to have in your kit if one did fail.
  10. One other thing to keep in mind as you upgrade your panel. From my “research” the core market for txi panels will not be vintage Mooney aircraft. The reason the Garmin rep spends all of his time on another forum is that the install rate for high end avionics is extremely low on our planes. This becomes a problem when you have compatibility problems or you are patiently waiting for an STC to come about. No market means very little support. The TXI and gfc600 might not ever get authorization for c/d/e/f models. If I had a panel looking like yours I’d be buying two G5’s and be first in line for the new Garmin AP.
  11. @NJMac looks like the shop is doing a great job getting rid of all the old wires and starting from scratch. I would take a strong look at @Browncbr1 new panel. I really like the results and the reasonable prices of the G5. Not to mention the future AP integration. If you buy the g500txi you cannot use the 7k Garmin AP instead you will spend 20k for the same added value with the upgraded model.
  12. Funny that you mention that. Before DXB posted I had already looked over that list (because of this thread). I have tons of noise makers (race, collectors, stamps, hunting, etc) but I don’t have a good compact rifle/buckshot setup for my necessary stops in Canada. I NEED to rectify that soon.
  13. I don’t think you will understand until someone flying a cub with no instruments starts telling you how worthless that shiny new ki300 is in your panel.
  14. Make sure they provide you with a TIT and IAT sensors and unlocks on the screen. My stc comes with a 238 degree limitation on IAT but I assume the temp needs to stay reasonable for the carb, not sure about the IO version. I also agree with @Brian Scranton get the proper documentation not just a couple scans.
  15. The great thing about panel upgrades is you can do them at your own pace. If you ask the wife for a digital AP this year you can wait a couple of years before going through that process again. I'm always starving for information. I need to know how everything works and formulate solutions to problems at work and normal day to day. I treat flying the same way. I really enjoy the extra information provided by glass panels, engine monitors, traffic advisory units, low enroute charts, etc. I like having backups to compare the primary info and to continue if there is a malfunction. I find the glass panel provides additional valuable information, reduces my workload, reminds me of critical altitudes, and gives me a huge amount of situational awareness. In my case it also allows my older AP to follow complex routes and approaches.
  16. What about for the TX clinic? I’ll only have 210tt with 130 in the mooney. I did not see a requirement on the page but I don’t want to be a burden on the process either.
  17. I think the OP is asking if only one G5 is used with the GAD 29 that the display is able to show the LOC and GS info. I’m also curious for using the unit as a secondary for that purpose.
  18. Not sure I’d leave the control like that, mine stays out and in the way all the time unless I need it. Good eyes doc.
  19. Just checked the specs on the 930, wow. Didn’t realize it was a 900lb full fuel UL 330 knot screamer. That thing has some legs with a 60kt advantage over the pc12. It would look mighty nice next to the C in the hanger.
  20. I wonder if all the acclaim top ends were because of low FF and low IAS climbs vs actual power output.
  21. Even if you flew a ton the fuel savings might be $1500 a year. The J is the sweet spot for under 100k planes. Nobody is going to buy a 500k J. Economics of scale is the problem with aircraft. That is why many manufacturers try to keep everything the same between models besides outsourced parts. I actually really like the striped down sr20. For around 400 it is a decent deal but the have a hard time selling.
  22. I’m almost sure you are correct about the ki300 being a certified sole backup unit. Personally I wouldn’t try to have both the gad43 and ki300 Interface with the AP. Too many calibrations are needed to get the units to work correctly. The other problem I see with the ki300 used as a backup is most BK AP’s it’s made to drive still need the encoding altimeter. That added to the secondary cdi means the only legacy gauge you are getting rid of is the ASI (the only gauge I actually like to have in analog format to see out of the corner of my eye). If I was going with the g500txi it would include the gad43e and L3 esi500 (with nav display)no question about it. That would be one clean panel.
  23. Might be thinking of X01, but I’ve never been there.
  24. A partnership plane that’s available on the weekends! I hope you find a compatible partner. Big plus on the LR tanks, the ONLY thing I really miss in my aircraft.
  25. Retiring in your 30’s? Guess I missed the boat as well. Not sure if I’d be able to do that with family, home expenses, business expenses, etc. Real estate has not had the exponential growth in my area and I could not imagine dipping into my investments this early with so many unknowns going forward. I guess I’ll just be the dumb bloke that continues to work hard so I can play hard.
