  1. Yep, the prices on anything BK have dropped to about zero. A lot of this occurred when the G5 started outputting AP info. However, it costs quite a bit to properly calibrate the unit to your AP.
  2. I think the problem is some older aircraft already have corrosion on the parts that are viewable during the strip process. Some might just cover that up with new sealer but any good shop or IA will want to stop and fix the problem. Sometimes the corrosion is too deep and the spar needs to be replaced which can be costly.
  3. I wonder if you can use the 7 inch display for both the EIS and backup PFD display to eliminate all other backup displays? TXI 10 inch | TXI 7 Inch | 750 | 750 I think I could keep it shiny side up with that!
  4. If you would have added a L3 500, <$3k upcharge, you could’ve removed everything else not just the vacuum pump. I think this is the new standard pricing. Is that price the installed price?
  5. The important thing is they have hardware now not just pretty pictures and broken promises. BK just bumped production another six months... I curious what a diehard BK supporter would do if the 256 went TU and he or she was AOG until a replacement was found. 3k to rebuild the Swiss Watch that has a used value of $200? 1k to buy and setup a used one and play Russian Roulette? Or keep the bird looking like new in the hanger while calling the local salesman on a weekly basis? Joking aside I feel that all the companies need to continue innovating, hopefully at a faster rate. I hope the FAA will allow companies that have proven certified equipment to fast track changes and upgrades to keep safety and enjoyment up. Hundreds of installers around the country are already familiar with the Aspen system and will be able to support those changes over reasonable time frames.
  6. Old post but he was one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet. Right up to the end he loved aviation and had a great time in his Mooney. He has/will continue to be missed, Dave “crash” Craddock.
  7. Sold after a few eBay auctions ran unsuccessfully, IIRC 88k was mentioned. I thought it was a really go deal, same way I feel about most bravo listings.
  8. I hit Ripon at 7:15 am on Thursday and had the sky to myself.
  9. I find the 18/g28 at a 45 to 50 degree crosswind is where I’m still learning and bring in too much speed. I’ve had a few 1-2 foot bounces which is always a humbling experience especially when you have an audience.
  10. The push button works well. However, I think both ends need to be replaced.
  11. I also use the same mount for my phone. However with the short arm you might get 3 or 4 inches of movement toward you versus 10-15? from the one you purchased. I don’t think the 1 inch sized ram balls will support two long arms stretched 15 inches without slipping unless you really crank them down. I tried them extensively in this configuration when using underwater strobes on my camera kit. Needed to lock them down when not in the water.
  12. Active is skywatch, L39000 w/active and Garmin 880 where the unit works independently from ground based relayed info. Works on the ground, less delay, more traffic depicted.
  13. If the unit was named L3 300 or if it was a direct plug and play it might stand a chance. Thing that bugs me about the Sandia unit is when the company was designing the AP interface their current customers were having problems with the units. Not sure if it was hardware or software but the company said we are busy for the next few months (working on the ki300) and the turnaround time would be at least 90 days. 90 days! If a company said that to me I’d get my IA to remove the unit and take it out back with a GoPro and a sledgehammer.
  14. The ideal friction adjustment would be very difficult to set. Turbulence would be the main problem. I have nice camera ball heads that work great holding the gear in position without clamping it down. However, this is on a stable tripod not thrashing around in the air. You could probably make it work, with a lot of drag, as long as the arm is not too long.
  15. Well you’re a mathematician that stopped at 3.14, not sure I can take faith in what you say anymore.
  16. No, unlike the G5 it will be sold/installed at the shop. For someone as handy as you that is a big disappointment. I was considering adding a single G5 and gfc500 to my aspen system but gave up on that idea. By the time you add in the installer premium the system will be twice the price of the TruTrak.
  17. Garmin already has thousands of hours with AP’s in Mooney aircraft with the 700. I’d imagine the list will populate quickly the only question being where the 500/600 cutoff is. My guess is your K will have a Garmin option available before osh ‘19.
  18. How so? The G5 is sold over the counter. TruTrack AP is too I think.
  19. Not sure what you mean. Lots of Mooney owners have the skills necessary to complete an upgrade like this. Just because I do not have 2k hours to build a plane does not mean I lack the skill. Also you have IA’s putting their reputation/job on the line making sure it was done correctly. How is this any different than a G5 install on steroids?
  20. I think Dynon would sell twice as many systems if they sold it over the counter. Many thrifty individuals with older/less expensive planes would love the project with huge savings available from local IA’s (sign off or less expensive help). If Dynon provided mostly plug and play wiring to some degree that would help. Open the floodgates!
  21. I’m interested to see the first 10 installs on customer planes. Keep hearing 10-15 k for installation alone of a BK-> gfc600 AP. Most are expecting the one or two shops qualified to install these units to charge half of that to change out everything in the plane and make a new panel. Hope it’s true!
  22. Bruce’s custom covers does a nice job at a fair price. Aircraftcovers.com
  23. Sounds like it had a good overhaul. I’d send it back to the same shop if it was mine but just for an inspection unless something else was discovered.
  24. If by original avionics you mean 155’s and a 94 and it’s lacking TKS I think you have a lot of wiggle room. However, you might want to spread out the justification to older avionics etc to make a better case. Also keep in mind @StevenL757 has an almost perfect example of what you’re looking at. He decided to go first class. However, others might just invest 6-7k to overhaul the bad cylinders and fly it for another 1500 hrs before a replacement is put in. 7 vs 70 makes it hard to put a value on this engine.
  25. Do they allow you to use an AP during the check ride? Sounds like you isolated the issue with the AP. Does the nav course correction data pass through the HSI or is it direct from the GPS?
