  1. I thought you needed to have a portable unit to receive that package?
  2. Along with a vintage Mooney attached according to many. I’ll be ready to scoop them up!
  3. I think a MS member sold one a few months ago for 6-700? Unfortunately less than one would think for a $3k unit. XM should come out with a less expensive plan before the entire aviation community dumps the subscription.
  4. The deals will continue to get better. Two years should have more options and cheaper prices.
  5. Same discount they had last year at this time.
  6. @M016576 I looked at Sarasota for the numbers but still feel the difference is negligible. The wifi adapters are very costly and it’s a shame they didn’t include the 510 with new 650/750 units. Can’t play the used card unless you do the same for both, again they will be the same price. The update cost will be the same for both of you use the same company, Jeppesen. If I was upgrading my 430w it would be a used 440 no question. However, with a new install I’d really look hard at the 650/750.
  7. Number tend to fly high around here. The 750 is $600 more than the 540. For a clean install like the OP was asking about the install price would be the same. To replace a 430/530 is not going to be a $9k labor charge, probably more like $3k. The places taking a used unit in are normally trying to flip (taking on risk/cost to put on the shelf or refurb) with a $1k margin. So I feel the price delta is zero for a clean install and $2.5k for a 430/530 swap.
  8. Greg, I really enjoy all the enthusiasm you and the new owners are showing at Laser. One area that would be nice to specialize in is AP installation. Picking one system like TruTrak and being able to quickly install it while having the plane stripped for an annual would be nice. People around here are also excited about the Dynon system so becoming a certified dealer for them might be nice on the west coast. Keep up the good work, wished I lived closer to utilize your shop!
  9. I don’t want to throw stones but I hope that’s not the engine from the Mooney that was sitting on the rims rotting away a few months back.
  10. The way I look at it is flying is expensive. There are very few free rides. Local rentals are $150-200 per Hobbs hour in my area. I’m planning on 150-200 hrs per year. I hope to stay right side up for a couple years but who knows what will happen. If I have to put an engine in after a couple years I’ll just get the job done. Upside down? I’m not one who sells stocks when they are bottoming out. I’ll buy them when I feel they are a good value and keep buying during any further declines. It’s worked out great for me so far... If I get upside down in my C I’ll just fly the piss out of it until I get my value out of it. It does not take long with the savings vs renting a capable plane. My ramblings
  11. This^ i think it would be a great buy at triple the price and 250kts speed. Too many promises...still waiting for a factory new eclipse 500 in the 600’s they were touting at Oshkosh 2006.
  12. If you watch the used market the 540 comes up for sale often at 11.5-12k. Add that to the almost free install (to the Garmin waas slots) and the $1k saved not needing the fs210 and it really is a good deal IMO. If buying new the units will cost the same and I feel the 750 is the better value mainly because Garmin is likely to be more stable over the next 30 years. I also agree with @gsxrpilot, if I owned a 430/530 non waas unit right now I’d be selling them NOW. Used 430’s still command the high 4’s with the waas upgrade costing 4K.
  13. I found the 750 interface very intuitive from the moment I started using it. Surprisingly, I struggle with it a lot more now that I’ve come up to speed on the 430w. Not sure why but I find myself regressing on the newer boxes as I learn the older interface.
  14. Great looking panel! I would think the pitch info would be more reliable where the 256 used to sit vs the tail that might induce more yaw forces?
  15. I agree with the above but in my case I’ll have around a thousand hours free in the next 4-5 years. I can spend the time flying or in my garage putting together a plane. My suggestion is allow vintage planes (80’s and older?) to permanently convert to experimental planes for those that want to tinker without employing hanger fairies. Might save older planes from becoming flower pots.
  16. I agree with @DXB and @flyntgr1 . I’d find a good local mechanic to drop the engine and get it iran’d by a good but reasonable shop. I would think 15k would get you back in the air if you shop around carefully. Sorry to hear about this, I’m under 150 hrs since my new to me C. Keeping my fingers crossed not to be shopping for an engine shop in the next few years.
  17. Battery in the back works great. Many sub zero starts this winter with no problems whatsoever. Should be impossible because my Gill battery is over a year old...;) Are you moving the oil cooler for high temps?
  18. That’s really good news for stec and all the other AP manufacturers. Should speed along the process unless stec has a different situation because of the previous approved units for Mooney aircraft.
  19. For fresh installs, like the OP has, the cost of units (650/440, 750/540) and install is the same. New and used they sell for the same amount (9ish and 12ish for used units). Garmin selling a $50 sdwifi card for $1500 is reason enough to buy the Avidyne IMO.
  20. @Tommy post up a picture of your panel so we can decide how best to spend the funds. Im starting to look at the Garmin 660 and gdl39(r). The reason I mention this is with a 430w or 650 will give you much needed screen real estate, the adsb weather and traffic (including TargetTrend), flight plan upload to your tablet, and additional data fields. Just a option if you are willing to mount a portable unit in the panel.
  21. Does the bare wire attachment lock the 660 in place or does the air gizmo mechanically do so? From the link it looks like the lever to release the 660 sticks out the side of the floating panel. Wondering if it just trips a button on the bare wire mount?
  22. I use a simple 7 day timer which powers an external relay. Works great for my needs and safety powers two 750 watt heaters. I’m normally at the hangar every week and just set it based on my work schedule and predicted weather. Interior and engine are normally at 75 when I hop in. A family member has an old remote beeper box that still works great (modified for cell phone) after 15 years.
  23. Any pictures of it in the vertical orientation? I remember a post on BT with a flush mount (minus air gizmo) that looked very nice next to an Aspen I think.
  24. I agree with this 100% especially with the shotgun panels that were original. However, for normal panels they specified, in the first few pages of the installation manual, that all other primary instrument remain in their current approved locations. But IMO as long as everything’s retained there should not be a problem.
  25. It would not be legal via the STC. Since only the AI portion of the G5 AI is certified primary everything else needs to be kept in the same position. The only FD it supports is the gfc500 FD. This is why the G5 cannot be used to replace the current FD AI on these aircraft. However, with dual g5’s And the 500 AP you are good to go.
