Paul, just curious what year your fire breather was overhauled?
-
You have to go with what you’re comfortable with. I’d bore scope the ovation and feel a lot better if everything looked good. Of course it would need to be a 100 percent hangared airplane from a dry part of the country. The eagle is a 15-20k expense immediately to put the proper prop and stc on it. You will also never be able to sell a 2500 hr engine but 1600 hr engines still command a premium from what I’ve seen.

What shop did the overhaul 13 years ago?
-
I would value that as a mid time engine. If a buyer came at me trying to justify another 30k off I’d respond, “don’t let the door hit you on the way out”. 600 or 1200 you are going to be replacing the cylinders one time anyway before it gets to TBO.

Good thing I have a fast camera to keep up with the Mooney. It would actually take a lot of time to do it right and get the best light at each location. Probably less unique with all the drones buzzing around to grab the good angles.

Very nice! If I had a hanger without electricity I’d permanently store a generator and use a couple space heaters. But at a tie down that’s a great way to avoid hauling around a propane tank.

It’s a big problem for north facing hangers, especially those that have poor drainage. Never use the pin during the winter, the water will refreeze and you’ll have the same issue next trip. Some people have used chicken wire and current to keep the ice melted. Others have used destructive measures and taken an ice spud to tear through the seal at the bottom of the door. Luckily I’ve not had to use such measures my first winter with a north facing unit. I make sure the snow is back from the hanger by 3 or so inches. I leave a skiff of snow to soak up the drip line which is about a foot out. If we get a warm up I’ll go to the airport to fly and make sure the refreeze will not lock me in. Good luck!

S-TEC Looking for 15 Mooney owners

On the BT thread they stec is combining some similar aircraft for certification. I would think the eagle and ovation could be combined.- 52 replies

Is the mechanic or avionics shop holding the process up? No reason why the mechanic can finish 95% of the annual and do almost all of the wiring before March. Someone needs to get something done before the last minute. Not your fault that he took on extra work while being six months behind already. If it comes to i I’d talk to the city and airport authority who employ him. I’m sorry but if I take on extra work while running behind nights and weekends will be devoted until I’m caught up.

S-TEC Looking for 15 Mooney owners

Is that true with all AP systems? STC’d for only one aircraft? I did read that you have to send in your head unit to receive the upgrade price which seems fair. It also plays nicely with non Garmin equipment which is a win in my book. The price for new customers is a little out there but the upgrade is in line as it is a stand alone unit.- 52 replies

Most of my flying is in a large 300 mile local radius. However, my cheap fuel source is 52nm away so I log a lot of CC time.

S-TEC Looking for 15 Mooney owners

Just to understand correctly you need 15 people for each model, c/e/f/j? The special warranty needs to be permanent if you want to sell any units down the road. Also the delta between current owners and new owners will probably drive away all of the latter. The new BK box is dead in the water imo for forcing people to use an expensive external attitude source and for being a BK box in general. Don’t dig your grave next to theirs.- 52 replies

Probably a little late but I’d be checking around for a different installer, might be able to find one that works out of a trailer to speed the process along without having to move your plane (hard to do in the condition its in). I hate this when any kind of contractor tears apart a functional(?) setup and leaves the project just to nail it down.

M20 C Engine Start problems
MIm20c replied to Urs_Wildermuth's topic in Vintage Mooneys (pre-J models)
If you can hear the box every time check the wiring from the SOS to the switch and back to the left mag. If everything test normal and is tight on the back of the switch I’d have someone check the left mag again.- 71 replies

Sounds like a starter adapter to me. However, my wife reminds me I’m wrong 95 percent of the time. Start with the cheaper stuff first.

Thought experiment... what’s the step up model?
MIm20c replied to bradp's topic in General Mooney Talk
200 wet? I’d be all over that. An F model rents for $170 in these parts. -
Is the shop close enough for weekly check up visits? You are doing a major gut job on the panel and it takes time. If he put the end of March as his deadline find out what still needs to be done and make sure he keeps to the timeline.

I was trying to support @KLRDMD claim that I feel the efficiency of the NA engine is reduced when engaging the turbo. It does even out my egt/cht values but the speed increase at non o2 altitudes is not very good. The climb performance is great though. That’s the revised STC max continuous power setting. Reduced slightly from the 26/28 that it was originally certified with. I never cruise above 22/24 and lately I’ve been enjoying 19.2/2350 for my training and cruising around. -

MIm20c replied to bradp's topic in General Mooney Talk
I find that if I level off at climb power 25 squared I’m only about 12-13 kts faster at 14,500 vs substantially lower fuel burn at 8-10k. Planning on getting a o2 tank and trying a max speed run at 18k but I’m limited to 2500/27 continuous, not sure I can break into the 170’s. -
Have to say the 150, 172, and piper equivalents were all on the table when I was looking to buy a plane last year. SOOO glad I did not go that direction.

This is a great deal for people with current stec systems. BK should have included the internal AHRS to the new AP instead of requiring the KI.

M20C Panel Redo: EGT rotary switch too BIG.

You can adjust the parameters and limits for fuel levels in the setup menu. I think if you use resistance on the new senders they will work??? -

I’d really like to own a 55 for a couple years to try something new. However, I realize in my income bracket I cannot support it for the long term. This thread is about stepping stones, the baron fits that mold very well IMO. Just the TVM with a 100k twin vs a 800k turbo prop is a real expense. Not to mention insurance and a larger hanger that many require. I also feel (guessing really) that the jump from my C to a 55 would be closer in operating expense than going from a 55 to a Duke or similar. Keep those twins in tip top shape until I can justify one! -

I would disconnect the starter signal wire and make sure you can hear the SOS every time you turn and push in the key. If it sounds like it’s working look up the procedure given earlier in this thread to make sure the left mag is working properly.- 71 replies
