  1. I wonder if the difference is whether the engine is store with dirty 50+ hours oil or fresh clean oil?

  3. Where’s the extra 600 lbs, I doubt the extended fuselage is that much…maybe 50 lbs of extra aluminum…so leaves about 400lbs of extra weight the Bravo is over a early model J?
  4. I think the key aspect of the layout should be everything you interact with should be in easy reach of right hand. You’re left hand is busy flying the plane, then the transponder, engine monitor can be in right stack.
  5. The GFC500 controller is not like a typical avionics box, it’s only like 2” deep, no rack needed. I’d recommend keeping on lower right side, very handy place to put it.
  6. 84 years old and still flying, I hope to be that lucky. I’m guessing that J has standard steam panel and pilot doesn’t use an EFB or have fancy panel that could have given him better situation awareness.
  7. Anyone who just spent the extra money for a yaw damper is going to tell you it’s worth it. Next time you’re in turbulence, look at the ball, on a J it moves but stays within a narrow range (less than +/- 1 ball width).

  11. Spend $1500, it’s a sdcard with wifi, I haven’t heard good things about it. Garmin also announced Planesync with built in cellular (gdl 60) that does this automatically.
  12. You’re assuming he lives alone. You can put it into a LLC to protect your address or the cheaper option is to use a PO box.

  15. As I understand it, when lights are off a wire connected to lights is basically grounded through the incandescent lights, which have some resistance, but allows full current to flow. When on, that wire is driven to +12v, so no extra current passes through the gear down light. So connecting that wire to a switch, which connected to ground (through a resistor) should do the same when on, and not when off.
  16. Garmin controls the installation/update process. I’m betting Garmin is making the writing of files more complicated than it needs to be. They should just write files like everyone else, no drivers or special software should be needed.
  17. PJ was using a windows computer…the problem is with Garmin.

  20. And does the battery power the separate AHRS, GAD29, GAD27 boxes the G3X requires? Does the G3X automatically switch over to using internal GPS?

  23. Good summary, a couple of other changes: They also beefed up the steel roll cage, there was some discussion here why 2900 lb increase only applies to certain serial numbers. And replacing the roof door air inlet with NACA inlet ducts in the tail and all the extra ductwork to go with it. No free lunch. If anyone wants to lighten the plane, total avionics upgrade can probably drop your weight by ~75lbs, figuring $75000 cost or 1 AMU per pound. :-)
