ncdmtb Posted August 26, 2013 Report Posted August 26, 2013 I am looking for a used fully functioning Garmin 430W.
yvesg Posted August 27, 2013 Report Posted August 27, 2013 Me too! Have been looking for over a year now... but at $7K this is still too much for a second hand unit....I will probably loose my medical before I can afford one... lolll Yves
M016576 Posted August 27, 2013 Report Posted August 27, 2013 They are really holding their value well. I guess the new GTN series isn't that revolutionary after all, seeing as the 430W provides the same WAAS functionality... I do love that new GUI/touchscreen though...
dcrogers11 Posted August 30, 2013 Report Posted August 30, 2013 All, What do you think the market is on a brand new 430W. I've got one still in the box that I've held onto waiting on a full blown panel upgrade to start this fall. I hate to admit that it was just sitting there waiting on me to make up my mind on the other upgrades. The final purchase that I had was waiting for was an S-tec 30. I've considered selling it and going the GTN route as suggested by the avionics shop. Still undicided. Don
KSMooniac Posted August 30, 2013 Report Posted August 30, 2013 Brand new 430W might be $7500-$8000 in my opinion with the install kit. You won't get a new price since you don't have a warranty as far as I know. They certainly have held their value! Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk 4
Piloto Posted August 30, 2013 Report Posted August 30, 2013 I would go for a used 530W. The difference is worth it. On the 530 you can see more at glance without the need of the extra scrolling or zooming on the 430. Very nice on approach procedures and flight plan view. José
dcrogers11 Posted August 30, 2013 Report Posted August 30, 2013 Good point on the warranty. My Garmin authorized avionics shop is the ones that purchased it for me and are holding on to it for the install. Since it is NIB and hadn't been installed, I would have thought that I still had the warranty. I'll have to ask now.
ncdmtb Posted September 1, 2013 Author Report Posted September 1, 2013 I have seen some 430W 28 volts. Does anyone have experience with a DC up converter? Or is it possible to have Garmin change the power out to 14v?
Piloto Posted September 3, 2013 Report Posted September 3, 2013 I have seen some 430W 28 volts. Does anyone have experience with a DC up converter? Or is it possible to have Garmin change the power out to 14v? The 28V units have the 16-20Watts COM transmitter. You only need 28V for the TX COM side. The NAV/GPS and COM RX will work on 14 volts. It is easier and cheaper to get a step up converter. They run at about $200. My 530AW is 28V but only the COM side is connected to the converter. Having the extra TX power is nice because you do not get blocked by others. José
jetdriven Posted September 3, 2013 Report Posted September 3, 2013 The downside of that is if that 28V converter fails, your G430 fails was well. Its another link in the chain.
rbridges Posted September 4, 2013 Report Posted September 4, 2013 if you're starting with nothing, what is the price difference to go with a GTN? I don't really know, but wouldn't install price be similar? If I already had a 430, obviously I would go with it, but I'd be tempted to go newer if I'm paying for hardware+installation.
Marauder Posted September 4, 2013 Report Posted September 4, 2013 if you're starting with nothing, what is the price difference to go with a GTN? I don't really know, but wouldn't install price be similar? If I already had a 430, obviously I would go with it, but I'd be tempted to go newer if I'm paying for hardware+installation. In the grand scheme of things (length of time it will be installed in the plane), the price difference is nothing. Used 430s still command in the $7k range and when you consider you can get the 650 (without installation) for a little over $9k (that is what I paid), why would you "upgrade' to an older technology? The reason the 430s still command the prices they do is purely due to a lack of a competitively priced alternative and the fact that demand exists.
yvesg Posted September 4, 2013 Report Posted September 4, 2013 I am kind of giving up on searching for an affordable WAAS solution. I'll open another thread on what my options are and maybe ask if some other pilots have some equipment collecting dust that would prefer life in a vintage Mooney :-) Yves
Piloto Posted September 5, 2013 Report Posted September 5, 2013 The downside of that is if that 28V converter fails, your G430 fails was well. Its another link in the chain. The up converter only powers the transmitter portion. So if it fails I will still have GPS/NAV and COM RX. The extra power is handy for when you are in the fringe coverage of ATC. I personally have yet to see a failed converter. The new ones employ switching technology that allow them to be more efficient thus requiring less or no cooling. José
aerobat95 Posted September 6, 2013 Report Posted September 6, 2013 I sold a used 430W for 6700.00 about 5 months ago....that was with install kit and rack.
