Out with the old, in with the new.  My Bendix boat anchor...I mean starter, had to go.  It just didn't have the power to get the cyclinders firing during those problematic hot starts and was starting to make some 'funny' noises on start up.  My spouce was kind enough to buy me a skytech starter as an Xmas present.  Here are the stats:

Stock Bendix - 18.3 LBS, really big, and not to strong

Skyteck 149-12LS - 7.8 LBS, Really small and you can almost taxi on the RPM's this thing puts out.

Results - 10.5 pounds lighter.  All of that weight comes out of of nose, a slight reaward shift of the CG (a good thing) and a motor that starts quickly hot, cold, dosen't matter...it just starts.

I need to replace my starter and does the Sky-Tech 149-12LS work with my 1965 E without any modifications? Who has the best price and what can I expect in labor hours for the swap?

thanks......

thanks for the info. I asked the shop at my FBO how long it would take to install and they told me just to cut and fit would be at least 4 hours labor. Another 8 hours labor to take out the old and install the new.....my thought.......they work on too many millon dollar jets......

Do you have to remove the gen to be able to get to the bolts on the starter?

since there is a difference of weight between the old starter and the Sky-Tech, how is the new W&B done? Looking through the boxes of papers which was given to me with the airplane, I can't seem to find the W&B numbers for the starter......

If you trust that whatever W&B sheet you have in your POH is current and correct, you could simply weigh the old and new starters and make the new calcs to update the W&B.  You could probably find the station for the starter in the maintenance manual...maybe.  Or you can find it from the TC data:

I just did the Skytech upgrade - my AMO charged me 2 hours labour, and installed a new EGT probe at the same time.
