NotarPilot Posted May 16, 2013 Report Posted May 16, 2013 That's a good point Lood. Can someone explain to me why we cycle the prop 3 times? Quote
1964-M20E Posted May 16, 2013 Report Posted May 16, 2013 I was told once for RPM, once for MP and once for oil pressure. i.e. you look at the RPM, MP and oil guages to see a drop as you cycle the prop. Also it is supposed to circulate warm oil to the prop. Quote
mikesalman Posted May 16, 2013 Author Report Posted May 16, 2013 I just want to say thank you to all the folks who took the time to help me get familiar with my airplane. It will take time but I am sure with a little patience and a lot of luck I will be ok. Quote
craigsteffen Posted May 27, 2013 Report Posted May 27, 2013 I just close my eyes and switch the mags. If the engine starts missing or shaking on one mag, I need to fix something. You should LOOK at the rpm to make sure that it DROPS on each magneto by itself compared to running on both. If it doesn't, then you could have a wiring fault that makes one mag always on, and so the other mag could fail and you wouldn't know. So checking the rpm drop on each mag is very important. Quote
FloridaMan Posted May 27, 2013 Report Posted May 27, 2013 I do the prop at 1500 RPM for two cycles and then do the mags at 1900 RPM. I can't remember how I figured it or if the below document is the one that I found that directed me to the change, but I seem to remember switching to 1900 RPM after reading a published update somewhere. http://www.lycoming.textron.com/support/publications/service-instructions/pdfs/SI1132B.pdf Quote

Also it is supposed to circulate warm oil to the prop. I was taught when I got my complex checkout was MP/RPM, then oil pressure, then check to see if there's oil on the windshield. When I did my checkout in my Mooney, I was taught to only cycle it twice at a lower RPM to be easier on the components. Someone else taught me that you can't get a change in RPM/MP and oil pressure without a change in all three when you cycle the prop and that it's more like you're checking to make sure the prop cycles and verifying the three instruments are working.
