Mooney1401 Posted January 29, 2013 Report Posted January 29, 2013 Hello I am looking at putting in a fuel flow gage. Any suggestions for a low tech model that's not going to break the bank. I fly a 77 M20J Quote
Mooney1401 Posted January 29, 2013 Author Report Posted January 29, 2013 Hi Jim. I was looking at the EI Fp5. I can have it installed up here for around 800 Canadian. Not sure if anyone has any feed back on this unit. I will read up on jpi. As well thanks Quote
DrBill Posted January 29, 2013 Report Posted January 29, 2013 I bought a used JPI 450 from a forum member doing an upgrade. It goes in the week of the 29th. The STC is free from JPI but you have to send them an email and they send it back to you in their reply. BILL Quote
jetdriven Posted January 29, 2013 Report Posted January 29, 2013 The 450 is a great unit, if I wanted FF only I would get that. Quote
Hector Posted January 29, 2013 Report Posted January 29, 2013 I have the 450 as well. Installed it a few months back. Working well and very accurate Quote

Still going strong, simple to use and recently was interfaced to my Garmin GTN 650. I have a lot of hours on it and am very happy with it. It also has fuel pressure capability and I can say it reports the digital value of what I see on the Mooney analog gauge accurately. If you have any questions on it, let me know. Quote

I upgraded to a JPI EDM 930 which permitted me to get rid of about 10 gauges scattered all over the panel but the 450 was extremely accurate. Typically the totalizer matched the fuel pump to 0.1 gallons. Quote
danb35 Posted January 29, 2013 Report Posted January 29, 2013 I have the EI FP-5L and am very happy with it. The JPI has a second line on the display, so it will read the fuel flow constantly, while allowing you to cycle among the other display options on the second line--nice feature, which the EI doesn't have. OTOH, the JPI uses an LED display, while the EI uses an LCD. The LCD is clearly visible in direct sunlight; I expect the LEDs would wash out. The EI also has a very nice, even backlight on the display, so night visibility isn't an issue. Quote
AmigOne Posted January 31, 2013 Report Posted January 31, 2013 Second to the engine monitor, my fuel flow JPI 450 is the most important instrument on the engine management side. Connected to my panel GPS it keeps extremely accurate record of fuel to destination, reserves in gls and hrs, etc. which gives you the confidence to make in-flight decisions to change your intended stop for whatever reason, weather being the most important. In my previous plane I had installed the EDM 700, combination engine monitor and FF in a single display but in present arrangement since I had the space I kind of like not having to scroll through all the data or flip any switches. I bought it at Sun & Fun and with the rebate I paid less than $500. Installation should less than a day and cost depends on your shop's rates. Quote
TTaylor Posted January 31, 2013 Report Posted January 31, 2013 My panel is full of LEDs (MX170C dual nav/comms, Aerospace Logic EGT and Ammeter/Voltmeter instruments, and the JPI FS450 fuel flow instrument). I only have one LCD in the form of an Astrotech LC-2 chronometer. Sunlight visability isn't an issue with any of them, but my J has a large glareshield "eyebrow" that very effectively shades the instruments. YMMV. To me the EI FP-5L and the JPI FS-450 are the only games in town for basic digital fuel flow instrumentation, and which one you choose comes down to personal preference. I chose the FS-450 because it was the cheapest at the time, and because it fit in best with my already LED-dominated panel. Jim Both the JPI FS450 and EI FP-5L are currently about $500 to $530 at retailers like Aircraft Spruce and Chief. Spruce offer free shipping on orders over $500. I just got a JPI FS450 but it was 50:50 on which one to pick. Quote
DrBill Posted March 2, 2013 Report Posted March 2, 2013 Had my JPI 450 installed and will give it a good test this weekend with a 5 hr PNP flight. BILL Quote
KSMooniac Posted March 2, 2013 Report Posted March 2, 2013 Do you currently have an engine monitor? I would place that higher on the priority list than a fuel totalizer, although both are important and very nice upgrades. If not, you might consider trying to get a JPI EDM-700 with the fuel flow option and kill two birds with one stone. I have that and it is wonderful. If you want to have the FF constantly showing, you can show it on a Garmin GNS screen in one of the customizable fields too, otherwise, it will scroll through the data on the EDM and show it in sequence with the rest of the parameters. Cris Posted March 3, 2013 Report Posted March 3, 2013 You might consider an Hoskins FT 101 which many of the early Mooney's had. They give fuel flow and total fuel used. I seem to remember putting a used one in a 78 201 and was able to hook it up to the factory transducer. Check in the parts for sale forum. There wear several available. Quote
1964-M20E Posted March 4, 2013 Report Posted March 4, 2013 FP5L is a great little unit. I had one in my former plane and in my current plane. accurate and easy to use and read. Quote
