Squelch a 430? How do you dim the brightness of a 430? I was shown once on how the 430 would show you the approach to the runway, not just to the airport. Had something to do with the OBS button I think? Want to train on that today. Flying at 6pm.

Thanks

Press the volume button for squelch. Remember what I said about chapters and pages? Turn the big knob on the right to the third chapter (I think 3rd, maybe 4th), with the menu items. Then turn the little knob to the one with the "LCD Brightness" menu option. Press "ENT." Use the big knob to select the brightness option. Then, use the little knob to select "Manual," press ENT (or is it turn the big knob, I can't remember) and adjust the brightness. I always turn my 530 all the way down at night.

For lining up with the runway, press the OBS button, then turn your HSI or coupled localizer needle to match the runway number.

The 430 (and I suppose the 530 too) is a confounding, non intuitive demon in your panel. Unfortunately, it's the best most of us can afford to have. I wonder how many pilots have died, getting lost in those menus and flown off course into a mountain or something. Anyhow, if you carry an iPad with you, I find this ap to be of help-

Worked all of these out successfully. Had to also change "VLOC" to 'GPS' in order for the 430 to match the runway. I did like the graphic of intercepting the bering relative to your position to the airport while approaching the pattern.
