JetSet1967 Posted December 28, 2012 Report Posted December 28, 2012 Does garmin make a antenna that you can mount on the exterior of the aircraft that will run both the gps and the xm weather? Quote
Jerry 5TJ Posted December 28, 2012 Report Posted December 28, 2012 Yes, there are some. Here's one http://www.cobham.com/media/7576/ci%20401-460%20data%20sheet.pdf It is about $650. Note that this is just an antenna, and many portable units like the Garmin Aera series use a separate XM antenna/receiver module. Quote
scottfromiowa Posted December 28, 2012 Report Posted December 28, 2012 I installed an exterior GPS antenna for my 696, but the XM runs off of the glareshield standard antenna. Is desire just to "clean-up" the glare shield? I have never had an issue with connection to XM. Quote
Bennett Posted December 28, 2012 Report Posted December 28, 2012 I have a Garmin 796 that I use a glareshield XM antenna with that works perfectly, and I use the internal GPS antenna on the 796, rather than the glareshield GPS antenna. I do not find any significant difference in signal strength, and the glareshield GPS antenna fitting into the 796 distorts the AirGizmo panel mount to the extent that it is difficult to set correctly into AirGizmo's socket, and makes taking the 798 out and in more difficult. Since I am on a 28 day Jeppesen update cycle for the 796, it was a pleasant surprise to find that I don't need the glareshield GPS antenna (or external antenna, of which I already have too many - GTN750, 430w, and a combination GPS/406 ELT). JetSet1967 Posted December 28, 2012 Author Report Posted December 28, 2012 I would like to install a external antenna just to clean up the cockpit. 1 Quote
N33GG Posted December 28, 2012 Report Posted December 28, 2012 I have an external GPS antenna, but the XM is on the glare shield... which in a C is very little space to work with. When I had my avoinics upgraded, they at least cleaned up the XM antenna so it doesn't look like a mess with the cables hanging in the cockpit. FWIW. 1 Quote
Txbyker Posted December 29, 2012 Report Posted December 29, 2012 Has anyone put the glare shield antenna under the glare shield? Quote
larryb Posted December 30, 2012 Report Posted December 30, 2012 Has anyone put the glare shield antenna under the glare shield? Not in a plane, but I have mounted a gps antenna under the dashboard on a car. Signal is fine, can't notice any reduction in strength. I imagine it would work fine. Quote
fantom Posted December 31, 2012 Report Posted December 31, 2012 Has anyone put the glare shield antenna under the glare shield? I've had my XM antenna under my glare shield for years. Never a problem. Quote
flyboy0681 Posted December 31, 2012 Report Posted December 31, 2012 I've had my XM antenna under my glare shield for years. Never a problem. Guess that's why I never noticed one Quote
jetdriven Posted December 31, 2012 Report Posted December 31, 2012 I connected my Aera 500 to the leftover Northstar GPS antenna and it works great, 12 satellites, full bars at all times. I connected it to the BNC cable from the old GPS with a BNC-MCX adapter from Amazon. 12$ Quote
